After getting a surprise late access to this years Stahleck party at the beginning of October i had to think about what to play. The fact that i had not played a single game due to work for 6 weeks did not make things easier especcially as during that time the pack Oberyns Revenge became legal with flea bottom and iron bank. So my backup plan was to play a variation of the targ rose deck i played at german nationals using flea bottom, plaza of pride, second sons and so on. But on the other hand i wanted to try something new and i tested Lanni Sun, which went quite ok and then tried Greyjoy Lion, which i thought would be fantastic, but lost almost every game, so it was not that good obviously.

When the tyrell box came out my first thought was how to improve my targ rose deck. Only by chance i put together some tyrell summer deck with like 64 cards or so to test them. It turned out the deck almost always won and i took out a few cards to get nearer to 60. It was also quite funny to play and after almost every game i realized one or two things i forgot or that could be done better. It is sometimes really absurd what you can do with this deck. Things i would have liked to add would be two Hands Judgement (although i did not really miss them in the tournament), 1 or 2 Begging Brothers and 1 Varys. But actually i was too lazy to do any more testing and just took the deck to Germany like it was and hoped for the best. After some games the day before the tournament i decidet to play the deck as i think after the release of valar dohaeris it will be much harder to play. The only last minute change i made was to take out song of summer for Calm over Westeros. If you have any specific questions or recommendations feel free to ask. After the tournament i would for sure try to add a third hightower.

Tournament Report:

I was really tired and the games are a little blurred so i can only give a very short report of every game:

Rd 1: Simon Svensson (Lanni Rains) Win:

It was a very tense game and i made a few mistakes. The biggest one was to forget to trigger Mace at the beginning of the challenge phase and so getting only to 14 power with my big power challenge. His plot was supporting the faith and i forgot that Mace triggered before, although i looked it up the day before. So i realized my mistake and thought i would not deserve the win. But he also only got to like 13 power and flipped a Plot with high initiative but i had trade routes and took one power in the draw phase and as he had no nightmares he could not stop me from getting another power in the marshalling phase.

Rd 2: Tamas Albeck (NW Fealty) Win:

It was a very tense game and went to time. The key was that he only found one milk for Margery, which i confiscated and then valared for mace and also killing his Halder. He could not find any more milks and so mace made a few power. I made another mistake during marshalling, when i reduced a chud, which gave him an action to nightmares Mace. I managed to keep him on 12 power as he had Benjen out and i think he was not milked. In the last round he went first but i had a lot of renown bodies and he had to get the win before mace would do his things. I was on thirteen power he attacked with qhorin and a mason i think so i could not win on defense but i nightmared the wall and he conceded as could not buff his characters anymore and i would get the two powers on defense now as my two renown military icons now were higher strength than his.

Rd 3: Christian Pelka (Lanni Wolf) Win:

I put out at least one renown body every round and had some dupes. I won one challenge every round amassing power on my characters and i think there was little he could do. I think i had one or two power on the house.

Rd 4: Daniel Correas (Tyrell Crossing) Win:

This was a very tense game and i sat back and we built massive boards with renown bodies and he was on something like 13 power going first in the last round. But i could ambush in an oldtown informer bestow 3 and find a nightmares to blank his loaded Garlan Tyrell. As he could not attack without giving me the win he did nothing in the challenge phase and i just won with an intrigue challenge getting renown and using mace if i remember correctly.

Rd 5: Florian H (Lanni Crossing) Win:

The game was even tighter and Florian almost won turn three or four, but i was able to play out my complete hand, so he could not get any power on big cersei and only reached 14 power, when his challenges were done. I striked back and took the win as his board was knelt.

Rd 6: Franke Roders (Lanni Rains) Win:

I had the hightower early (i even think setup) and this was decisive as i had at least one extra gold and extra card every turn and he just could not overcome this advantage, although as far as i can judge it he played the Lanni Rains perfectly.

Rd 7: James waumsley (NW Summer) Loss:

This game is on camera, so you can watch it if you like. The best part was the coin flip by James in Round one when he managed to put it into my coffe cup. I made a mistake round one as i did not attack with all renown bodies, so i left one power on the table. I think overall there were like 3 or 4 challenges in 6 turns. The rest of the game was searching and shuffling and triggering the gift. As i was in the cut already i did not pay a lot of attention. i only searched for dupes and bodyguards and nightmares, which i could not find as far as i remember. The game ended after 6 rounds at 12 to 10, before the double valar. I gave him the full win and moved on.

Rd 8: Achab (Tyrell Crossing) Win:

I do not remember a lot of this game. He wanted to rush i sat back and did not do a lot but only defended to keep him from running away.

Top 32: Stephen Ebrey (Targ Rains) Loss:

I do not remember, whether i took a mulligan but anyway this game was lost after round one as i had no military icon and only chuds with mace. I did not prevent his rains trigger turn one because i did not pay attention, that he already had the plaza, flea bottom combo and so he could use quaithe to remove one of my defenders. He then valared early to get rid of mace. i only drew locations and had a lot of locations and could perhaps have come back if i drew any characters. But he then played political disaster and that was it basically.

Special thanks to Richard Walker for lending me his Calm over Westeros.

The tournament was a lot of fun as every year and i hope to come back next year.

Gratulations to our Captain of team Austria. Well played like every year in Stahleck. Two times in a row in Top 32 is great.

Great run! With your draw, I'm not sure what else you could've done against me in the top 32 game. Sometimes it happens in card games :(.

Thanks for the kind words Ebrey, but you fully deserved the win as you just played better and did not allow any way back. I really like the political disaster in your deck. Hope to see you and your crew again next year.
