**Playing with Fire aka Ladies put your Hands up - **

I’ve brought this to the Store Championship in Berlin, Germany. I’ve finished 1st in Swiss after 5 rounds only dropping points to a timed draw in my first game and then won both games in the top 4 cut. I think the deck is super consistent with a fine early board presence and strong scaling into the late game. It’s neither a very agressive nor tricksy deck, it lives from the correct plot choices, careful play to protect your key characters against kill events and then valuing the challange types. With that many stand and challange math manipulation it has great ways to dictate the game….

… but there are also some flaws. The biggest weaknesses are wildfire, because we play so many cheap unique characters and no Fire & Blood, and Varys, because without treachery & targeted kill there’s no way to kill him, if our opponent isn’t bold enough, to make challanges with him :) The good thing is, you can play around both pretty well. Never overcommiting the board, if you dont have to, prioritizing winning intrigue both offensively and defensively and later on duping at least 2 characters, to be varys proof.

Some card choices:

  • Double Summons: I CANT STRESS ENOUGH HOW KEY THIS WAS!!! If you don’t play double summons in a Danny centric Targ deck already, do it! Danny is BOTH your draw and your win condition. The 2nd Summons just adds so much consistency. Additionally so many answers in our deck are characters, Viserys to attachments, Margaery to Balon, Ser Jorah, if we need fast renown, Illyrio late or against Bara, Dragons if we have Danny, Margaery if we have Randyll or vice versa. Even grabing a handmaiden can be a huge power play.
  • Filthy Accusations: I’m a very save player and hate to hope that my opponent doesn’t have Put to the Sword / Tears / Seastone chair etc. And this buys you one more turn to get the board in your favour. It’s usually my tempo play in turn 3 or 4, I don’t like keeping it too long.

  • Bodyguard: 50 % of the time it protects Danny or Randyll from Put to the Sword, Tears, Things I do for Love, Seastone Chair and Varys. 50 % its claim soak for 1 gold. Im fine with both, you could go without it, but I hate hoping that my opponent doesn’t have “that” card^^ I fell like 2 is the correct number.

  • 3 Seal of the Hand: Play Seal and Play 3! Its the No. 1 target for attachment removal, so I really want to see a dupe or 2nd to replay it. I also think Danny is the best right hand in the game (yes even better than Balon or Tywin) as the stand combos so nicely with her ability. Getting insight off more often is also key. Pro Tip: If Danny isn’t out yet, drop it on Margaery and watch your opponent cry^^
  • Milk of the Poppy: Yeah…meh. you don’t really need them. I added them to fight greyjoy a bit better, because we don’t have our own Mil stealther and when they got 3 to 4 out it gets really nasty. They’re rarely dead cards, but also weren’t me winning games.

  • Tears of Lys: I tried the deck without them, and kinda liked it, but again I put them back in to fight greyjoy a little better. They’re a little bit too variance dependent to my liking, sometimes amazing, but especially against Lannister often totally dead. Could’ve gone without them and wouldn’t miss them a lot I assume.

  • The Hand’s Judgment: DONT THINK ABOUT CUTTING EVEN A SINGLE COPY! I’d rather cut Dracarys! than Hands Jugdment. Yes they are that important!

Cards not in the Deck:

  • Wildfire Assault & Fire and Blood: I feel like they go Hand in Hand at the moment. The deck doesn’t need Wildfire or a board reset in general, because big boards are won by Daenerys passive effect und you getting 5 renown each round. But against a good Nights Watch deck, you need to getyour renown out ASAP. Summons for Drogon, Randyll, Margaery or Ser Jorah.
  • The Knight of Flowers: I’m still unsure on the 5-costers territory. KOF is a fine card, but all the effects that have synergy with him (Margy, Heartsbane) I wanted to use on someone else. Im not too sold on Littlefinger too, with 2 Summons and a million stand on Danny cards where never a problem. I really liked Illyrio though, but he could be win more. Still figuring this out.
  • Plaza of Punishment: In theory the card is so amazing in this deck, because we’re fairly power focused, but in practice I just didn’t need it. 2 STR characters are 1 STR with Danny and 1 STR characters aren’t causing me problems. I understand, that sometimes it can be amazing, but also sometimes it does very little. If everyone starts bannering Stark, I will start running Plaza though :D

Why no Drogo? Randy and Drogo together seems really strong and would you play WInds of Winter in this deck? I run it in all my Targ decks. Targ Rose is really a prime Winds of Winter deck, especially if you run Drogo, getting to hammer that double claim mil challenge twice is really good.

I would probably drop the Littlefinger and a Braided Warrior for 2 Drogo.

Drop 3 Milk for 2 Rattleshirt Raiders and a Plaza. This lets you drop the confiscation if you want to free up plot space but also gives you more ways to get rid of stuff like opposing Seals. The hefty attachment suite is not my thing but is certainly not bad, I would run 1 Heartsbane and add a single Fire in blood.

By running more ways to get rid of attachments you can play that Winds of Winter instead of a Confiscation, Milking Danny is not the end of the world and with double summons you have ways to find those cards to remove the attachments.

Playing a little bird also helps you against Tears with Randy and Drogo (if you include him), its a slightly more pro active card that gives you some flexibility.

It is probably also correct to drop 1 Randyll if you want to play Drogo (which I think you should), then you can play the third reducer location, good for setup and you really need that gold. My changes that I would do:

-1 Braided Warrior -1 Littlefinger -3 Milk of the Poppy -1 Confiscation -1 Bodyguard -1 Randyll Tarly

+2 Khal Drogo +1 Fire and Blood +2 Rattle shirt Raiders +1 Little bird +1 Winds of Winter +1 Illyrio’s Estate.

But congrats on the finish and interesting to see your reasoning for the card choices.

I just realized I made your deck illegal with my changes.

Instead I would run it like this:

Cut all the Braided Warriors in favor of 2 Arbor Knights to help you get to your banner requirement and they have good icons + pump effects.

@Barnie25Thanks for your response!

I think you’re suggesting two different things here:

1) Switching the attachment handle package from Confiscation and 2 Viserys Targaryen to no Confiscation and 2 Rattleshirt’s Raiders. One of the reasons I like Targ is, that they’re able to handle quite easily 2 attachments a game and I feel like that is 90 % of the time enough for the attachments that really hurt. Replacing Confiscation with Rattleshirts would give you the ability to remove more than 2 - 3 attachments and free a Plot spot, but also hurt your consistency. If you really need room for another plot, I suggest cutting Filthy Accusations first..it can be a strong tempo play or buy you time when you’re in a rough spot, but its at no means vital for the deck.

2) Playing Khal Drogo in this deck.
The deck as it is is a very defensive deck. Most of the time I care about winning military the least and just make Mil challanges to gain renown on Randyll. The deck wins through renown and card advantage by Danny (Danny, Rhaegal and Seal are not too far-fetched and outdraw pretty much any house) I agree with you, that if you run Drogo, you also want Plaza of Punishment, The Winds of Winter and probably even a 2nd Marched to the Wall. With Randyll and Drogo switching Bodyguard to Little Bird sounds fine for me too.

But now we are talking about a very different deck. And honestly at this point, why do you banner Tyrell? Lannister would give you Ser Jaime Lannister, Widow’s Wail and The Things I Do For Love. Or you could go for the Kranken Banner and get all those Stealth characters, who are also great Little Bird targets.

Barnie25 227

@Dippy Yeah I could see dropping the Filthy of you were to go that route.

The reason why you banner Tyrell is Marg and Standy Randy. The extra power challenge presence is so good and strength buffs are vital for mirrors. What people might not get at first is that if you play Randyll, Drogo and Winds you are not an aggressive deck perse, instead you have the ability to switch gears. That tempo play you talked about with Filthy, do that with Winds and Drogo out and you can totally swing a game. It lets you play defense when you need and then turn it when you need. A different approach is doing feint challenges, send in a chud or two and see what your opponent does, do they defend both? Great, do they let one through? Even better. With the extra renown you can play defense and grab renown and win power challenges.

Don’t underestimate the power of the Tyrell Banner. The ability to turn up the heat with double challenges and renown, strength buffing is extremely potent. It makes challenge math impossible and gives you loads of options. Don’t change the banner, just try the new approach. Look at Aaron Glazers Lanni Tyrell deck, it is similar in approach to what I proposed, renown and big guys. The key difference being that Targ has more aggro potential with Drogo, Winds and Dracarys.

@Barnie25 You have good arguments. I understand your thoughts behind your suggested Changes better now. I still think dropping Copies of Randyll and Heartsbane for Khal Drogo weakens your consistency, but it also opens up a different route of playstyle, which you are correct to say that you don’t have to go. But having the possibility is value too.

I could see: - 1 Filthy Accusations, - 1 Randyll Tarly, - 1 Heartsbane, - 2 Braided Warrior - 3 Milk of the Poppy

+1 The Winds of Winter, +2 Khal Drogo, + 2 Arbor Knight, + 2 Plaza of Punishment and +1 Illyrio’s Estate

When I have time, I will try it out and let you know, what I think about it :-)

Barnie25 227

@Dippy Its good to see that you follow my reasoning. I see players often play too many dupes of a certain card just because dupes over security and it reduces variance somewhat but it also reduces your ability to be versatile and to be able to absorb the loss of a major character. I will be waiting for your results :)

If you were to take out the Tears, what might you replace them with?
