TLDR: Gotta go fast? This goes FAST!

Hello,

I am not really going to do a tournament report since the meta will be overhauled on April 7th. Instead I will talk about what I think sets GJ The Lord of the Crossing from Fealty. I think there is a fundamental difference between the decks. Both are solid, and should see play going forward. But since I did well this this, this is the one I am going to talk about.

I will get to Euron Crow's Eye in a bit. Yeah, he was gone. No, I did not miss him.

So this is a rush deck. Like hard core try to win by Turn 3 rush. I want to catch people unawares and any dawdling will result in getting rolled. And the main facilitator of this brand of rush are unopposed challenges. Fealty can take its time, build a board presence, hit with some clutch moves and then take their time wrapping up. This deck has no room for well set up plays. It needs to get board state fast and then go all in.

The biggest way to do that is Raiding Longship. Threat of activation on that bad boy is huge. People will let you have the unopposed rather than throw a chud in to uselessly defend it. This card is well beyond the power curve. It did work all day. I saw it in every game, and I did not need to use it most of the time. 4 games it just stood there. Allowing my -1 challenge to go unopposed, or let The Seastone Chair fire off to pick off big targets. The opponents strength does not matter. Between stealth and this boat, Lannister's mighty bodies do not do much.

However, that card is a blank card if I do not win initiative...

So plots were selected with initiative as a Major consideration. Taxation was my default opener. I played it solely for the stat lines. 5 gold guaranteed is solid, and 6 initiative will beat most openers. And if I get to drop 2 limited, then good gumdrops for me. But with about 20 reps with this deck under my belt, I was only able to do it twice, so don't count on it. Rise of the Kraken was my default closer. That plot can make a 7-8 power jump fairly easily. That left me with 5 open slots. Calling the Banners was a good econ plot that would still let me move forward with the rush. Confiscation was present more for getting bodyguards off high priority targets so I can hit them with the chair. Heads on Spikes was there as a power gain in the plot phase if I came up short on a Rise of the Kraken turn, and for decks that might have to hold on to high priory targets in their hand because of Econ issues (Targ Fealty & Bara fealty). Decks that go wide can be a pain for me, so Wildfire Assault went in ahead of The First Snow of Winter because of the stat line. I had one spot free, so Marched to the Wall got the slot over A Clash of Kings so I can have an opener that punished 1 character setups. Marching an 6-7 coster round 1 can win you the game.

With lords of the crossing, I could get extra power fairly easily. However, it does make me play in a way that I would normally not play. Fealty can ignore intrigue as an attack. I have to have intrigue as an attack, even if it is to just chump and loose. So my character spread was built to have those in mind. The Reader and Priest of the Drowned God did work (the Littlebird was a late addition and it did nothing all tournament, potential cut). I also need bodies. This is hard in GJ, as you will run a lot of locations to get to most out of the house. So this meant a lot of non-unique dudes. Asha Greyjoy can only do so much work. She can get you maybe 2 challenges, but it is not guaranteed and good players will know how to play around her at this point.

This is why Euron Crow's Eye was put on the cutting room floor. Without A Noble Cause and fealty, I was not able to get him out reliably. He was just dead weight in my deck. I'd rather have more non-uniques that I can play easier to make my 3 challenges.

Playing the deck has one main trick to it, you have to prep for losing challenges. Normally unopposed. That is where the 3 Risen from the Sea and 2 The Hand's Judgment come in. They will let you loose military and intrigue and stay in the game. And you will need redundancy since you will loose multiple challenges. Just let them go unopposed and they will put that power on their house card. That is your power, they just don't know it yet.

Bara sucks. It will beat you unless you get stupid lucky and put Stannis's head on a spike round 2. If you think you will see Bara, find room for 2 seals of the hands.

So...to get back to my point (ie the difference between this and Fealty) is in the play style. Fealty does not need to make every challenge. They can play defense. They can take their time to let the board state develop, let the opponent get some power on their house and then blow them out of the water. They can run A Noble Cause and go second to get Balon or Euron out for cheap.

This deck can't do that. It has to go fast. FFFFAAAAASSSSSTTT. But when it does, it is a thing of beauty.

Nice, glad to see something with no Lanni/Lion. I built one of these a while ago. Similar, but I run Euron. I never use to, but he's like economy. I use 3 HJ. And i can see Bara hurting. Oh and my reset is First Snow right now, just trying it out. Again congrats.

I played a similar deck and went 4-2. Instead of pure rush I was playing early tempo with some kill to ensure setting up 3 definite challenges with Balon Greyjoy out for the third power challenge and a 7-10 point close with Rise of the Kraken on turn 4 or 5. Used 3x Euron Crow's Eye and gave him stealth with a Wildling Scout or Syrio Forel for my -1, chump mil, and The Lord of the Crossing with Balon Greyjoy +/- Theon Greyjoy.

I ran into economy issues in a few games and had trouble getting Balon out more than Euron. When Euron was there he gave me renown and a The Kingsroad pretty much every turn. I think with the higher gold spoiled plots like Fallen from Favor this deck will be even better. Saw The First Snow of Winter twice to little effect.

Worst bad beat for an opponent playing Watch/Kraken who was up 12(house card)-8(4 on house card, 3 on Euron, 1 on Balon, with Asha out). I played Rise and went 1st. Marshalled a Wildling Scout and passed. He marshalled Varys duped with 6-8 other characters out. Stealth Euron, unopposed Balon, swung for 9. Like @Beknirvana said, it's a thing of beauty. Also beat GJ/Fealty, Lanni/LotC x2 (one jumper, one not).

Lost to Bara/Rose when I didn't see a single GJ location until turn 6(Sea Tower), and made pretty bad play with a Wildfire Assault that put me behind with Melisandre standing. Lightbringer knealt Balon on my Rise and that was the game. Rookie mistake. Also, lost to Stark Fealty that went first 4/5 turns and didn't give up a single unopposed challenge.

Congrats on the success, @Beknirvana!

cut the little bird for a seal ? great deck congrats!

I'm curious why you include The Reader in your deck. I'm finding that the Priest of the Drowned God works much better to get the necessary into play and it pumps up the other Drowned God characters. I can't justify the cost, especially in a deck that needs to go fast.

akenathon80 1

@AisoRedthe reader most of all i suppose for the drawing ability. I have some doubt about the taxation plot, nothing better?

grimwalker 1

@akenathon80 there are only 2 plots in the game with both 5g and 6+ initiative. One of them is Sneak Attack and I can't see that going in a Crossing deck.

grimwalker 1

@AisoRed ¿porque no los dos?

He's running 3x Priest of the Drowned God but they aren't enough overall.

Beknirvana 184

@AisoRed The Reader was money all day. Draw keeps the rush tempo going, and if I used him to lead with an intrigue challenge, he would often win, even with the -1. Random discard is powerful, specifically on decks that do not expect to loose. 5 cost is pricey, but doable, unlike Euron Crow's Eye. Also, I am running 3 priests of The Drowned God. They are that good.

@akenathon80 I opened my binder, looked at all the plots that could work as high iniative, decent gold, openers. Sneak Attack is just not doable in Crossing (but might be in fealty) so it went in, and that 6 initiative of Taxation would beat out any other opener. It is not the best plot, but it is the best for this deck and what it is trying to do.

@Beknirvana thanks for the answers!

With Wolves of the North out today, do you think Ahead of the Tide would be a good fit here? Maybe allow for a plot or two that's lower initiative value but has some different/better other values?

Beknirvana 184

@VorrtI will be doing a full overhaul when I get my hands on the new box. But top priority is finding room for 3 Ahead of the Tide. That card is so good.

Vorrt 1

So Beknirvana, How do you handle the lack of draw with the deck? I played a bunch of tests with this last night and everytime I lost, it was because i didn't see a single character past my setup and refill hands.

Do you think summons or counting coppers could find room in the plot deck, with Ahead of the Tide in the deck?

Beknirvana 184

I had Counting Coppers in testing. I came to the conclusion that if I needed to dig for cards, I had already lost. If I was not drawing bodies, I would actually play a bit more defensively. There were times I would pass on the LotC bonus to make sure I could defend a military challenge.

Ahead of the tide might make CC viable again. I will be picking up my WotN tonight and will start to play around.

Crabshack101 7

I hate to press but how did Ahead of the tide do? Have you tested with it yet? Does it make CC worth it? Really like this deck and I would love to give Greyjoy more love at regionals this year.

Vorrt 1

Ahead of the Tide was okay in the testing I did last week. Nothing to sing to the heavens though. The biggest issue I still run into with this deck is if I draw no characters to help maintain/improve my board state.

I'll start with a decent board, keep it going through plot 2, but after that the deck just seems to stall out. Now that could be because of how aggressive I play the deck, and I should consider holding back until I have a better presence, but I looked at this deck as one that's just hard hitting fast pace attack.

The other card in this deck I didn't see much value with is Fishing Nets, but I'm not against it yet. I'm going to test some more.

Crabshack101 7

@VorrtAre you running Counting Coppers with Ahead of the Tide?

Vorrt 1

I did not at the time, which was my mistake. I'm going to build that tonight with coppers and try again.

Beknirvana 184

Sorry about the delay. Tuesday night is game night, so this is when I got a chance to sit down and play. I dropped a Fishing Net, Support of the People, and The Kraken's Grasp for X3 Ahead of the Tide. I also dropped Marched to the Wall for Counting Coppers. Ahead of the Tide did not do so well. Most of the time, it was just sitting in my hand. It did not cantrip out because I was holding to to play with Counting Coppers. It was kind of a dead card in my hand.

I played a Bara feality, but I was able to roll it. He was running the same deck Tyler did against me in the finals, but he could not draw enough characters to keep ahead of me. I was able to close it out in 4 rounds.

He then switched to the Lanni Kracken that the brotherhood w/o manners played in the CT regional. That deck is a problematic matchup. It runs a stupid amount of stealth. Tyrion, Asha, Theon, Maester Wendy, and Syrio. I was able to match stealth for stealth, so he could not get ahead. But the The First Snow of Winter was brutal. When I saw first snow in Indy, I was fine. I had dupes, or Risen from the Sea. I came out of it without fear of the follow up March. Both games I played I got wiped by it. Really, I am not sure of the answer. I have 14 characters that can survive the wipe, but I don't have solid plots to get them out. I think Counting Coppers is a mandatory plot just to counter that. It lets you top deck for dupes/saves. When iron mines comes out, I will run that. But for now, counting might be the answer to first snow. It lets you dig, and hope you get lucky. I am going to need to think real hard about that matchup.

I then played a Stark fealty and rolled it in 3 plots. Not much to say about that. This deck does not care about big bodies. It just steath/boats past them.

So yeah, Counting Coppers is in, Marched to the Wall is out. Fallen from Favor might be usable, but this deck struggles on having bodies, and even losing the econ wienies hurts. Confiscation will probably be dropped for Weapons at the Door because of the iniative, and it opens up more things to the chair. The Seastone Chair needs to be a X3 (what was I thinking). I still think Ahead of the Tide is a better card than the Cardgamedb crew, but it is not as good as I would have hoped. I am probably going to drop down to a 1 of if even that. If I have to count coppers, then I must accept that I am in a bad place and will not get to go first. It is a good utility plot to have, and the scripted game only needs 3/4 plots anyways.

And those are my thoughts after game night. Hope it helps.

Crabshack101 7

@Beknirvanado you think that if you run 3 of Ahead of the tide then mebe you cnan change up your plots like taxation and other ones you just threw into there for high imitative?

Beknirvana 184

@Crabshack101I'd rather just have the high initiative. One of the things about plots is that they are reliable. They will fire off when I want them to fire off. I do not need to worry about drawing into something to make it worthwhile.

Crabshack101 7

@BeknirvanaGood point. You were saying taxation was subpar, so I wanted to see if Ahead affected you use of that plot. Can you update to the version with your changes when you settle on something? that would be fantastic :)

Beknirvana 184

I don't know thronesdb well enough on how to update a published deck, so I posted a new one like a scrub.
