I had one goal, get that sweet sweet playmat. Once I was 4-0, I ID'd my last match so I could get my prizes(awesome alt art cards(not Varys), Draculas coins, Draculas Stark tokens(top Stark player) and Stark acrylic tokens, drop, and take that long 6 hour drive home. Winning is not that important to me(#mysonmeansmore) and I have my Regional this upcoming Saturday so I'll get another shot. I was tempted to get Stark its first Regional win as I got NW their first SC win, but the long drive factored greater.

Scantrell and Atlanta were awesome hosts with awesome prizes. Thanks to John for putting me up Friday night. Met some really cool and nice people and found some that are pretty close to Durham.

RD 1: vs SC bye. My opponent was so scared he didn't even show, lol. W

RD 2: vs Kurt Targ/Lion- He setup Mirri and I played Winterfell and Ice turn one. That was the end of Mirri and he just couldn't recover as Fast Ed showed up and an 8 power turn finished it 15-2. W

RD 3: vs Scott Martell/Lion- This was my closest match of the day as he setup a duped Gregor and got Nymeria out turn 1. I had Fast Ed and Robb, but nothing to stop Gregor and Nymeria. I got Jory out turn 1 just in case and played Building to get Winterfell and told Gregor to suck it, lol. The turning point of the match and a giant swing was his First Snow turn. Nymeria took Robb's M icon and swung in with Nymeria trying to force Fast Ed to kneel but he forgot that Ice works on D and I Iced Tyrion and then ran away with it from there 15-4. Scott was a cool dude and I'm glad my drop got him in the top 8. W

RD 4: vs Josh GJ/Dragon- He did a good write up on this match. Basically I got my big guys before he did and it was never close, 15-0. W

RD 5: ID

Play defensively until you get the big guys. Winterfell is amazing and if you can get the Robb-Jon combo going it's going to be hard to beat. I actually made significant changes to the deck in the parking lot before walking in. I added 3x Milk, dropped Trading for a 2nd Calling and added a 3rd Bodyguard.

I actually think Stark has a lot of answers to what a lot of the "top" decks want to do and I just really have always liked Stark and wanted to play them in a tournament. I know some people have said that Winterfell is a big "tempo" hit, but I think it will turn out to be more of a hit to your opponent in the entirety of the game, and the +1 Str is to not be overlooked and great counter in the Targ matchup.

Ask, compliment, or criticize away, lol.

Looks nice! And congrats getting all of those nice stuff! Wondering about would you add crypts and what to cut for those?

kidohearts 1269

@Esmo I wouldn't, I'm not about removing their characters with the exception of 2x Ice. More characters for them means more money for me, lol. And thanks

Is this a "Winterfell based deck"? Very surprise to see 3 copies of winterfell and also building orders. So, is the target to have winterfell asap?

jaquen 50

Congrats @kidohearts! I'm playing a similar deck, but in Italy we're facing a meta built of Lannister aggro with winter plots and Trial. So I'd like to know: how did The Pack Survives perform for you? And what about Bodyguard?

scantrell24 3334

Thanks for coming down! I love the power-rush Stark builds.

kidohearts 1269

@xikitins you can also you Building for Ice, Milk, Econ, draw, whatever is needed. I'd say it's a play defensive for as long as it takes to get at least 2 big dudes and then turn on the speed.

@jaquen I think the Pack would be great, but hard to say, I saw it once and didn't need it. I like the idea of giving them big M challenge to kneel 2 guys to cancel their PttS, take claim and stand everyone with Robb. I got that off in testing.

kidohearts 1269

@xikitins @jaquen also the +1 from Winterfell is not the o be overlooked, very important in Targ matchup. I also use Pack as Bran backup, 5 cancels is nice. I think if I dropped it, I'd go with Winter is Coming maybe, or a 3rd Ice and a 3rd Jon. That Robb-Jon combo is so so good, with Fast Ed it's bonkers, block up to he M challenge and use Jon when needed.

xikitins 53

good! Thanks @kidohearts.

Why not A noble cause with all those Lords?

kidohearts 1269

@xikitins I knew that question would arise eventually. So i thought of it like this. My plan with this deck is to play Calm first turn unless i really need Building(mostly to combat Mirri, Gregor, or maybe Tyrion) for either Winterfell(1st choice), Ice(2nd), or Milk. So by the time turn 2 comes i'm sure they will have at least 4 characters which means Calling is the same gold as Noble but +6 initiative, and I may not always have a lord or lady. Also I don't really care about M challenges on offense unless its to trigger Ice or Blackfish draw, so they will always have dudes and if they Naval then I'll still get the character gold.

jaquen 50

Thank you @kidoheartsfor your answer! Did you find bodyguard useful?

papagallardo 8

@kidoheartsplease publish your results this sunday!

Cyggie 2

Did not having any Winter plots hurt the utility of Winterfell? Or were you mainly using it to prevent event card plays or triggers on defense?

kidohearts 1269

@jaquen i only saw BG twice. Once it was setup up and once i never played it. It's purpose is to protect against GJ, Mirri, Gregor, or Tears so it makes it a bit more versatile than Little Bird.

@papagallardo I will, but strangely I may not even play, i'm sure i'll play and fail as I have no idea what I want to play. NW called to me once and Stark did this time, but with the tournaments so close nothing is jumping out.

@Cyggie Didn't bother me at all. I just didn't put characters that could trigger in that challenge. But yes almost exclusively defensive. Can let things go UO and not worry about triggers like big M attacks, or Tears, Gregor, Mirri, SeaStone chair, etc...

Cyggie 2

Thanks for your answer and congrats!

SirLargeness 470

Have you gotten the opportunity to test this against Crossings decks, primarily Greyjoy? i can assume that Winterfell helps against Seaston chair, but does the lack of stealth hurt your ability to just gain raw power as quickly as they do?

kidohearts 1269

@SirLargeness sorry Thrones was down and I've been wanting to answer. I have not tested against Crossing, but I think this deck would like that matchup. The big downfall that Crossing has is you have to give up UO challenges. So either they kneel out their board by going first which lets me have a field day or they need to defend which i'm also fine with. If I have Robb and Jon then its very very good. One of their challenges they have to do before getting the STR bump is either M or P so I would block that up with Fast Ed and company, get like 4-5 renown. Then chump the last, use Jon and then its my turn. And I don't really care about doing M challenges so I would go get power off their house. So in that turn I should end up with like 7-9 power and they got like 3-5 maybe. I am trying a Stark Crossing using FatCat. I have wondered if I want to squeeze in Winter is Coming somewhere for P challenges, but in my games there wasn't often a time they had power for me to get and I was winning mostly by renown. If I were to drop something it might be Gates as I didn't see it all day, but draw is good. But you are correct if I don't see some kind of pieces, especially Fast Ed, they may get their first.

SirLargeness 470

Tested a variation of this deck, honestly never gave Winterfell the time of day preferring more aggro Mil stark previously. I can say that Winterfell is a beast, and 3 of is the right number. The protection it and Catelyn core provide against Crossings (and Targ for that matter) make the matchup easier, and we almost prefer them to go first. Must Watch out for We do Not Sow in the Greyjoy crossing matchup, and not sure if more stealth would help that, but uneasy about what that might be. Any of the Direwolf stuff outside of 2x greywind and 1x summer is probably unnecessary

kidohearts 1269

@SirLargeness and that's where the Milks come in. The GJ I played of course wanted to go first and that let me Milk the character that needed it most. With the deck you should have to lose too many UO and use Winterfell on one that you will and hopefully Cat can get into another one. I had an early version of Stark that was more kill based but I guess i've discovered I'm a control player, lol. This is a bit more control based. I've been toying with the idea of fitting in Nightmares to help even more with the control part but not sure what I would drop. I know Pack could be one as I didn't use it, but I just like the idea of Bran backup and kneeling 2 guys has been no problem in testing. I may go to 2 BG and drop 2 of something else, I would like 3x Nightmares. But something I thought of that is interesting is that this and the NW-Kraken that I won a SC with both only had 5 cards that couldn't be setup.

SirLargeness 470

good thoughts. Im actually trying a no event build, trying 2xCrytps location instead as an "action on a stick". I like blanking cards in my opponents hand, and zero actions turns every Hands judgement into a dead card. Could be risky/greedy, but with winterfell and the huge renown dudes, i just havent seen any actions that i consider super necessary, and thats coming from a guy in love with Winter is Coming and For the North. Nightmare could be that thing though, so right on if it works for you. just wanted to say thanks for getting me to consider Winterfell and this provided a great first step towards what ill be playing for the next few regionals.

kidohearts 1269

@SirLargeness no problem and thanks for the comments, thoughts, and feedback.

Cyggie 2

Just as a follow-up do you feel that the upcoming release of Ward, hurts the value of Catelyn Stark? Is it enough to shift the deck towards the new Catelyn Stark?

kidohearts 1269

@papagallardo look in Lanni for deck called Wildlings i just posted

papagallardo 8

@kidoheartsthanks!! I was actually hoping you play stark... I am looking for a good stark deck... I will post my deck tomorrow, te one i came up with... Maybe you can give me your opinion

kidohearts 1269

@papagallardo a guy took my exact deck and won the MS regional yesterday. his report is under: "kidohearts, this is for you"

Using pretty much this exact deck. Had a warm up tourney last weekend, placed 2 at 2-1(only 6 showed up) probably could have went 3-0 but was afraid of Rob it blackfish getting gaston'd and didn't see a potential cat combo with either for 3 turns and reginonals this weekend. With the new cp out the meta is full of martell with tyene. So I added 2x Like warm rain to hopefully nip her in the bud either as being first player to get my reaction off first or by defending with cat. Also added 2x ward. In place of 1x bodyguard , 2x arya, and 1x kenel master. Thoughts/opinions.

JiveXXX 1

Sorry didn't mean to be rude. THANKS @kidohearts

kidohearts 1269

@JiveXXX i didn't find anything rude, maybe i missed it, lol. First off, if i'm facing Martell, i might mulligan for Cat or Summons for her soon. Once she's in an INT challenge, none of that stuff matters. But of course Martell has many was to remove those. So what you could do is make it more Lady specific. That way if you get Lady and Kennel Master then you can get Cat into any challenge.

Quickly and without testing, I dropped both new Sansa for one core Sansa and one Mordane. I then dropped all 3 BG for 2x Ward and a 3rd Ice. Ice could be key too as you could kill Nymeria or Tyene.

Remember this too though: mulligan for Winterfell or drop Building turn 1 if you can find it. Winterfell shuts off Tears and Tyene and then there isn't much you need it for against Martell.

There should be many good answers: Ice, Milk, Winterfell, Cat

But against Martell, i think the most impactful card will be Winterfell

JiveXXX 1

@kidohearts I didn't see winterfell at all even with building orders, talk about unlucky! Then he kept taking cats INT with nymeria luckly tyene wasn't out yet or i would have been toast. Was really just wondering if you would consider Like warm rain at all in this deck or not and what you would make room for for ward.

JiveXXX 1

Also @kidohearts did you not like the wotn sansa? Her and hodor are a beast on set up.

kidohearts 1269

@JiveXXX I do really like new Sansa, I just think about core Sansa having renown and getting a power on Standing. I like Warm Rain, but not sure what I would drop. I really like Pack for Bran backup. Maybe try 2x Ice and 1x Ward for the 2x Rain?

JiveXXX 1

That and I feel that running ward and not running a marched to the wall plot is a missed opportunity.

JiveXXX 1

Also I feel I'm basing to much off the one loss. I don't get a lot of play testing in so I'm probably just over reacting on switching out cards.

kidohearts 1269

@JiveXXX if your on OCTGN, I don't mind helping you test if you need to. also a few people topped Swiss and did well in cut with what looks to be about the same exact deck but the new cards.

JiveXXX 1

@kidoheartsWhat's OCTGN? And I wanted you oppinion/ ideas on how to reliably open with FsoW, using ward that turn for M protection, then followed by marched to the wall to claim 2 of there characters and none of yours if you didn't sac the ward already. If such A thing is reliable/ consistent that is. And when you ward all dupes and attachments come with right?

kidohearts 1269

@JiveXXX OCTGN is a program you download on your computer where you can play card gam s with players around the world. I think that would go bad. To do that first turn, you would need a big cost person on setup and then have a Roseroad as Ward cost 4. When you March you'd also be down to one character. I don't think it would work. You do get the dupes but I don't think you can choose to use them or not b/c your not the "owner" of the character.

JiveXXX 1

@kidohearts definitely have to get OCTGN to help with my play testing issue. And thank for offering to playtest with me. Yea my idea was to setup with 2x 4 costers with either a roseroad or heart tree to pay for ward. The likelihood of having a setup like that was something I didn't know how to make consistent. From the little testing I had and from other comments, this deck usually doesn't make it past round 5 or so. Figured if there were 2 unused plots making room for this combo might be possible and to have in your pocket if you ever got the setup like this would seriously put your opponent on the ropes. I'll try to get OCTGN set up asap to get as much play time in as possible for the tournament this weekend.

JiveXXX 1

Got OCTGN set up @kidohearts. You might have to talk me through it a bit lol.
