This is the deck I brought to the Paris regional last week-end. I ended up 3rd overall and swiss runner-up. With the same deck I also won a small GNK a couple of weeks ago.

Key ideas

The spine of the deck is a fairly straightforward mid-range Targ burn deck, that evolved organically from my previous Targ/Wars deck, with a few key changes:

  • Double Marched to the Wall. This kind of Targ decks have no specific win condition, so you have to control/empty the board first, and then do regular challenges to reach 15 powers. The strategy works well in the current weeny/low curve meta, but you might struggle a lot against big guys deck. Double marched helps a lot against that, it fits well with Wars to Come and the abundance of Targ from-the-discard-pile effects. Also, it can often surprise the opponent, especially if you feint "wasting" your first Marched against a mid-range character.

  • Aegon as finisher. As you have no win condition, you might often struggle to finish the game if the opponent doesn't concede. This is particularly bad in actual tournaments, where the risk of losing at the end of time is real. Aegon Targaryen helps a lot with this, especially if you pair it with a 2 claim plot and an impactful character like Daario.

  • Recursion. The usual strategy to beat Targ burn is to make them use burn events early in the game, when it doesn't matter much, e.g., because you're gonna reset later anyway, and go all-in late when they likely don't have burn anymore. So here I play 2x Isle of Ravens and 2x Shadowblack Lane, to make sure I see either if not both of them in most games. That, plus 3x A Drawon Is No Slave generally makes you have burn in hand for the entire match.

Plot deck

Double Marched, as discussed above. Exchange of Information instead of a 2nd Counting Coppers, generally as opener, for the extra gold and extra initiative, and also for tutoring the Crown T1 as a counter against annoying characters like small Catelyn, Tris, or Aeron. Riddle is often my 3rd Counting (possibly as opener) and might save your day if used to double opponent Valar. Retaliation is the finisher, generally after you've setup Aegon in Shadow and made sure Daario is in the draw deck. The rest is business as usual: board control, economy, location control.

Draw deck

Mostly good-stuff cards, so just a few notes.

Characters. 1x Khal and 1x Daario because they are really just finishers, not needed early/mid-game. You can play Khal early, either to bait a reset, or if you feel confident in the classic T1 Retaliation with Plaza of Pride and Khal on setup---it might win you games, but of course is very risky. 2x Freedmen to fuel your Marched, resist First Snow, and (re)populate the board quickly either on T1 with no econ, or after a reset.

Attachments. The obvious crown. Beggar King might be added to have an additional target for Exchange of Information, but I remain skeptical of the usefulness of King In The North in Targ burn, so I prefer to not play that module and avoid having stuff that would get in the way of my own Nothing Burns.

Locations. 2x for both Isle of Ravens/Shadowblack Lane for recursion as discussed above (plus, Isle is a great Flea Bottom counter in the current meta). Non-limited econ because it makes stellar setup and boosts your Trade Routes. 2x Gates of the Moon because having it on setup it's game-changing.

Event. The usual burn, Put to the Torch as the perfect match for Nothing Burns, and Nightmares for mirror matches (or Bran, Winterfell, whatever :-)). 2x Fire and Blood rather than 1x (which is often considered enough with Shadowblack Lane), because you really want to tutor burn above all else, and cycling dragons is useful also in early game.

Tournament aftermath

I'm bad at tournament reports, so I won't even try. I went 6-2 overall, and lost in both occasions against passive power gain: one against Martell/Wars that makes 6 power in a turn with Doran's Game (which I couldn't stop), and one against Iron Throne/Chamber (I went 2-1 against that deck during the day, but on the 3rd occasion I had a horrible setup and would never really recover from it, that's life :-)).

In hindsight, I'd had back more location control. To go well with Nothing Burns you really need 2x Put to the Torch, or maybe 1x + 1x Jade Sea Dromond. I've cut the 2nd Put to the Torch a few weeks back for 1x Funeral Pyre because I feared not having enough draw in late game, but that has never really been the case, so switching back might make sense. Also, slotting in a 2nd copy of Littlefinger might make sense: it's an useful power icon in late game, and useful money in early, and you can cycle it well with Marched/Dohaeris/Isle.

Feedback welcome!

how did you feel about not having HJ? personally i think its so important that i'd include it 3x. ive also found that milk is so helpful vs your "hard" matchups (tyrell, martell) while still fullfilling the same job as nightmares (pyrodany, bran, etc)

i also think tourney grounds x2 is enough

i came to the same conclusion with king-tech. ive also played with put to the torch and put to the sword, i loved both but ended up dropping them. with so many events, i had too often to discard to reserve because i need to hold on to this events until i can play them - i still think theyre a great addition

atm i play with seized and think its enough even if you blank a location for only 2 rounds, its more than enough to give you control - but its always the same debate: dromond, seized, pttt haha

ive tried to include the aegon+daario with retaliation combo as well, but i felt like this combo is too unreliable/not needed/clunky - also i think aegon is too expensive, atleast for my deck

interesting that you dropped blood of the dragon plot too!

hey @inahgiam !

I don't like HJ because it's a potentially dead card (except from the Plaza recycling of course). What do you want it for? If it's for mirrors, in the current meta Nightmares on opponent's Dany is much more effective, and never a dead card.

Regarding Milk, I don't like it for 2 reasons. First, it gets in the way of Nothing Burns; second, I want to remove characters from the board (with either Marched or burn), so why wasting time to Milk them? Oh, and also, your opponent will tech against your Milk, so if it should be a temporary thing for just one turn, you might as well play Nightmares, which also works on locations.

Tourney Grounds is a matter of taste of course. I love how efficient it makes setups and when both you and your opponent play Nothing Burns having it 3x is not really a waste. (But of course sometimes you might wish you had more "real" gold.)

I'm curious as to why you find Aegon+Daario unreliable. I can assure you that with 2x Isle of Ravens and all the on-demand discard you have in Targ, it has never happened to me that I could make sure he is on the draw deck at the right time. (Well, actually, yes, it happened to me exactly once, but because I forgot it was in the discard pile, and hence didn't trigger Isle of Ravens before Aegon :-))

typo "I could make sure" should have been "I couldn't make sure" (i.e., I can always put Daario in the draw deck when I need him)

oh yeah attachments + nothing burns doesnt fit too well. i see your point there. martel and tyrell usually dont really run antiattachment tho. and it realy destroys them! when you play with seized, you dont need nothingburns

the main reason i included hj was to counter dorans game. ive thought alot about the martell matchup and what makes them win:

dorans game & and the immense strength buff by princes plan (unburnable)

with hj you can counter their wincondition easily (and then with isle shuffle princes plan back into their deck). also its great to counter nightmares or opponents hj or any other annoying events which will fuck up the plan you have in head for this round.

also helpful vs any other faction: gj-> risen, bara->seen in flames, nw->recruiting/discarding your guys (mutiny) etc etc

tourney grounds i loved too until i ran in too many political disasters.

about aegon+daario: first time i tried this combo i had no 2 claim plot and was like "wow, retaliation would fit so well with them". then i tried a game and the turn i played retaliation i just drew daario and was like "well shit" lol and didnt like it anymore. but with plaza+isle you can make sure to get him in the draw deck again! but thats 2 locations to have out so youre able to use your plot safely and you cant use those locations for something maybe more important this round. also i didnt feel like realy needing 2 claim because of the amount of burn to clear the board

@inahgiam: agreed on Seized by the Guard, it's an alternative approach to location control that I haven't played much, but that might totally make sense.

Re: HJ, agreed too, there are many interesting things to counter. And, to be fair, it might have saved my game against Doran's Game in the tournament. I'm still not sure it's better than Nightmares. So either you can make them fit 2x of each (I can't ATM) or I wouldn't do that, but that's just me.

Re: Daario Naharis, note that you don't need both locations, you only need Isle of Ravens, as you've plenty of other ways of discarding the card you want on demand (Qotho, Consuming Flames, and discard to reserve).

CATS 21

How are the Freedmen working out for you? I never tried them, but always wanted to. I am also playing Blood of the Dragon.

zack 126

I love Freedmen in this build, they're just perfect with double Marched to the Wall and can also serve as claim soak if you don't see your Fire and Blood to cycle dragons.

Clearly, they get in the way of Blood of the Dragon. With 10 plots I think you can afford to play both of them anyway, but you do lose some efficiency/flexibility in doing so.
