Shift 56

This is the deck I used at the Regionals tournament in Holt, MI, where I placed 5th. Lannister was all over this tournament, and First Snows of Winter intimidated me (because that thing is like dragon genocide).

I can't recall all rounds specifically, I think below is pretty close (there was a metric ton of Lannister and they all kind of blended together).

Round 1: Win vs. Martell Fealty

Round 2: Win vs. Lannister?

Round 3: Win vs. Lannister?

Round 4: Win vs. Greyjoy Fealty

Round 5: Win vs. Lannister/Targaryen (or Targaryen/Lannister?)

Round 6: Draw vs. Lannister

Top 8, Round 1: Loss vs. Lannister

My tournament luck was good until the final game. Dupes on dragons/Jorah allowed me to survive the First Snows, and I was fortunate enough to pull Milks and Crown at beneficial times. Dracarys! did was Dracarys! does, and is constantly intimidating even when not in hand; the threat of power is power.

MVP cards: Dracarys!, Daenerys Targaryen, Syrio Forel

Honorable mentions: Khal Drogo

No-shows: Tears of Lys (I mean literally I'm not sure if I even saw one (though one may have been pulled during an intrigue challenge?), I started to wonder if I even had them in the deck (I did, but seriously watdafuq (amirite?)))

Was there any point during the day you wished you had The Hand's Judgment

Shift 56

@linkingverbsThere are a couple of cards that The Hand's Judgment would certainly have helped with: Risen from the Sea, Put to the Sword, Dracarys!, Seen In Flames, etc... However, I wasn't entirely worried about Put to the Sword because I was confident in my military, and Risen from the Sea doesn't work well as a counter to Dracarys!. I knew that in our meta (as in most), Lannister would be the most common deck. I'm not concerned about in house events from Lannister, so the only other card that concerned me was Tears of Lys. Waking the Dragon helped against Tears, and otherwise I was willing to take the risk.

TL;DR - Removing The Hand's Judgment was a difficult choice, but I think it ended up being the right one.

Why did you use Ranger's Cache and The Long Winter? Did you like 3xDrogon?

Shift 56

@TankreI used to use Counting Coppers because Targ doesn't have reliable draw. I was testing Ranger's Cache instead as an experiment. Turns out I really like Ranger's Cache as an alternative to Counting Coppers. I think The Long Winter is a solid card because of the 2 claim. I don't really care about losing the 1 power because usually I'll make it up during the turn. However, more often then not I think I played it at inopportune times because of the low initiative. Not sure if it will stay in the deck (but two military challenges with 2 claim each is basically a board clear if you can make them happen).

I don't know about 3x Drogon... Essentially I just wanted more opportunities to dupe dragons to avoid The First Snow of Winter but in the future, I might try this deck with 2 Drogon instead.

What did you think of shadowblack lane? I have been back and forth with it. I currently have winds of winter instead of long winter I am not sure if +2 initiative is worth -1 gold. Also nice job in the regionals!

Shift 56

@hotpieShadowblack Lane worked really well for me. There were a couple of instances where wiffed on it, but it was really valuable for the most part. It works even better with Rebuilding because it allows you to cycle cards that much faster. Also, since you're still in a challenge you can immediately use a Dracarys! on any participating character on the same challenge you pull it with Shadowblack.

I 100% agree with you on the The Winds of Winter vs. The Long Winter. I think in the end, winds would have been better... I like The Long Winter for most decks, but since the cost curve in Targ is a little lower, I think the extra initiative would have been better for me.

You plowed through the field were a worthy adversary. Congrats on your finish!

How did Blood of the Dragon work out for you? I am thinking of replacing wildfire assault with it.

Shift 56

Honestly I kind of hated it. More often than not it didn't do me any good. This could have been simply because I suck with it, but for me, I'd prefer another plot instead.

Maybe you'll have better luck with it though.

hotpie 1

Nope your right. I did a little testing, I think wildfire is so much better for targ. We can use it aggressively with fire and blood and it can get us out of trouble sometimes too.

@Shift "Also, since you're still in a challenge you can immediately use a Dracarys! on any participating character on the same challenge you pull it with Shadowblack."

Actually you can't. Shadowblack is reaction to winning. Once you're into DUCK, there's no action window until after the challenge is over.

joshthestampede 1

@imabunneh No, you're still in the same action window you triggered Shadowblack in, so you can play Dracarys right away. The action window doesn't close until both players pass. So you Shadowblack, opponent passes, you Dracarys.

Same as pulling a location with Support of the People and then triggering it (the Mander or Street of the Sisters or whatever) in the same window.

Shift 56

@joshthestampedeI think @imabunneh is actually correct here. There is a window where you search for a card with Shadowblack, but it isn't an action window, it's a reaction to the trigger "win an intrigue challenge." In that case, it doesn't trigger an action window for another card. This never came up in the tournament, but I'm fairly certain @imabunnehhas it right and I was mistaken above.

joshthestampede 1

It's exactly the same as the situation I described above - winning a POW by 5, casting Support of the People, and using it to grab The Mander or Great Kraken, which you can immediately use becuase you're still in the same window.

If we were talking about Interrupt it would be different, but Actions and Reactions happen in a window where as many things as you want can happen until both players pass.

imabunneh 361

@joshthestampede - you can use Mander etc because you're in a window of Reacting to winning/losing. It's not an action window, you can't play "Action" cards in it.
