Hello everyone,

We had our monthly tournament yesterday and House Stark reined supreme! Although we had some great games, I just want to highlight two games where the true power of the Starks proved victorious.

Stark V. Martell/Dragon:

-In my setup, I had Eddard (Wolves), Bran, and a Heart Tree Grove. My opponent dropped Tyene Sand, Reducer, and a Roseroad. Luckily, I drew Winterfell, Catelyn, and a Kingsroad in my setup/setup draw--this proved to be the savior of the game. I opened A Noble Cause, opponent opened The Long Plan in which she dropped a Kingsroad and got Mirri out... Ouch... With my Kingsroad, I was able to marshal Catelyn, then Fealty reduce to get out Winterfell--phew! Safety net against Tyene and Mirri--without these two, my opponent would have bent me over and destroyed me. During turn two, my opponent dropped an Attainted on Catelyn--ouch, and Magister Illyrio comes out--very good move on her part. Now, if I see 2 gold, I won't know if she is saving it for Vengeance For Elia, or to stand Mirri back up... Decisions. I was able to get out Sansa (Wolves) and Arya (Core), but what concerned me was Catelyn being out of the intrigue challenges--and--if she does have vengeance, I can only pop Winterfell to protect against Mirri or Tyene--the pressure is mounting, Starks don't like to be on the defense. Turn three was where the game swung in my favor. I plotted Confiscation and brought Catelyn back into the fight, saving Winterfell for my mil challenges, chipping away at her characters, gaining renown with Fast Eddy. By turn 4, I had out The Blackfish and Septa Mordane, giving a huge renown boost. By turn 5, I gained 6 power in one turn giving the game a win for me.

Highlights and MVP's - Catelyn and Winterfell absolutely won this game. Fighting Mirri and Tyene turn 1 would have been a lost cause without these two.

Stark V. Greyjoy/Stag

-My one buddy has made a very, very nasty Greyjoy/Stag deck. He is also an extremely intelligent guy and outstanding pilot. Him and I did some testing the week prior and he beat me 4 games in a row. The elements that you have to deal with are Asha, Balon + The Great Kraken. Then, factor in Melisandre, the R'hllor/Filth Accusations kneel, + Ser Barristan and The Iron Mines saving every character you kill = Not fun to play against. During Setup, I had out Eddard, Bran and A Heart Tree Grove (Second time today), he drops Ser Davos, Sea Tower, and Rattleshirts Raiders. I drop A Noble Cause, drop another Heart Tree, get out The Blackfish and Catelyn. He drops Asha (Damnit!), Iron Mines (Double Damnit!), and a Reducer. A few power gained for each side here, killing off his reducer and I got rid of Bran (I can always get him back with Summer). Turn 2... Ok, I need to get rid of Asha, now. I have Ice in my hand, but with that damn Iron Mine and no Winterfell, I need to think of something. Then, I remembered Wardens Of The North, I place Ice on Eddard, and also drop Grey Wind. I have to do this right, pray he doesn't have Melisandre. After he does his marshalling, I initiate a military with Grey Wind, wait for his response, I bring in Catelyn and Eddard, win, Ice Asha and the Iron Mines cannot save her! Huge power swing! Now he chooses his claim, then I kneel with Grey Wind's intimidate. That has effectively put the board in my favor. The next turn, he used Wildfire Assault (To be expected), and he drops Balon--ok, still not out of this one. I milked Balon and we grinding that turn, not much of a change. Then I draw Ward, he drops Littlefinger, and I played The Long Winter (The two claim is nasty). I then used Ward on his Davos, and the game was effectively mine.

Highlights and MVP's - Wardens Of The North, seriously this plot is outstanding if you know when and how to use it. Catelyn just shuts down everything, huge shout out to her.

Thanks so much for reading, everyone! Let me know if you have any questions or comments. Also, yes, there were more games played, I just wanted to highlight my two most exciting.

The Tully Trout 1

Nice deck and good tournament report. I am curious how you feel about Jon Snow? I usually see at least 2 in stark decks.

Thanks, @The Tully Trout! I do like Jon, but I feel that I get more use out of Grey Wind for a few reasons. First, Grey Wind can be targeted by Fealty. Second, if I am going to make a military challenge where I need to have my opponent lose a big character-but they have a (chud 1 or 2 STR character out), I can kneel Grey Wind to kill that character, in which they are forced to kill off one of their big characters. Third, his intimidate ability is very nice to kneel down a potential threat.

Which leads to the fourth factor, Jon and Grey Wind almost have the same ability. Grey Wind can kill off your chuds, Jon can sac anyone. Ideally, you do this with Robb out. However, that is Jon's only real ability, sac to stand. Grey Wind has much more versatility to him. He is my choice for now.
