This is the deck with which me and Stephen won the Milan and Dicehouse Store Championships.

http://thejoustingpavilion.com/tournaments/4807

He also made the top at the Thrones W.A.R. with the same deck. He asked me for a targaryen deck for that tournament some months ago and since then he helped me testing and tuning it. I think his version had -1 Isle of Ravens -1 PttT +1 estate +1 fire and blood.

I started to play HrD Plaza some months ago, before consuming flames was released, cause I think targ has enough efficiency to overcome the agenda drawback and that Plaza of Punishment is on of the best choices for the agenda.
It always seemed to me that it costed too much to play it in a “normal” deck, but having it from turn 1 gives you a huge advantage in the challenge phase.

The deck is built around targaryen’s cost efficiency: Brainu and other players showed how good double coppers with Qotho, freedman and flea + sons is, so I decided to start from there to balance the 4 gold setup.

Thus I decided to drop all the big guys but Dany, which is too important and one of the win conditions.

The deck was flowing really good but I needed an acceleration in economy (one limited per turn was not enough and estates were sometimes unuseful) and I was consistently loosing against deck who relied on locations more than characters (Martell Stag for example).

So I decided to play 3 tourney grounds, 3 put to the torch and Nothing Burns, dropping some of the burn and character control but making the deck solid against more archetypes. Location control is also very good in mirror matches and against Tyrell, since Hightower is a huge problem to deal with.

The latest addition, which pretty much solved the economy, is gates of the moon 2x (thanks Axxo for showing me the way :D).

Another important choice was to drop blood of the dragon and crown of gold: I always try to think outside the box, and even if the plot seems like an autoinclude I noticed that double Valar helped me more in keeping the board short, which is crucial for the deck.
You already have your terminal effect in the Plaza of Punishment so Blood of the dragon is good but not strictly necessary.

The gameplan is usually to flip coppers into coppers into trade routes, developing your economy and holding up the board thanks to qotho, freedman, flea and burn.

The deck has many triggers and tricks so it’s not easy at all to play it: it requires a lot of practice before you can pilot it at its best, but it’s also very fun and rewarding once you take confidence with it.

Last but not least, I want to thank all my metametas and my playtesting team for helping me coming up with this amazing deck. <3

Feel free to ask questions in the comment, I’ll do my best to answer when I read them.
I hope you enjoy the deck!

Have you faced Political Disaster? How did it go? It looks like it breaks the deck.

Nimer 2757

HI @r480! It can certainly be a huge problem if you don't expect it. Otherwise you have many unique locations that can dupe if you fear it. Even saving plaza, 1 limited, flea and the other plaza or astapor could be enough since he will also be low on resources and you have very cheap recursion.

r480 158

Yup, dupes was my guess. I'll have to try something similar. Also, another question that pops up in my mind, first snow? :'( :'( Thanks for the deck and congrats for the results it gave you!!

Stormborn 301

I’ve had a good look at this deck and it looks legitimate - super solid build and happy that it has done so well. Can’t really question any of the deck choices. Really like just 2xTargaryen Loyalists. With the low curve, and the fact you can’t get the Dany Chud set-up: 2 looks right. I could argue for a 1xKhal who acts as a 4th Dany. My only question mark would be about 17 neutrals in a deck with Qotho and Consuming Flames.

Nimer 2757

First snow can be a problem of course but on the other hand a short board is always good for you. With flea, freedman, qotho, fire and blood you could sneak in an unexpected dracarys or challenge win, preparing the field for a juicy marched to wall. ;)

Nimer 2757

@Stormbornyeah you're right. It happened a couple of times that I had to keep a card I wanted to play to fuel a consuming flames. You gotta keep attention to it. 1x Khal was in and out many times. When I removed the iron banks for torches though I decided to leave him out. Unsullied can put enough pressure, have no attachments and can be played in a non trade routes turn so I opted for them.

Out of curiosity, was your loss v. Tyrell/Red Door a loss against a Bitterbridge deck? I've pondered quite a bit that matchup and I find it to be almost impossible for Targ/Red Door. On the other hand I was running a single reset in my Targ/Red Door plot line at the time. Double Valar certainly helps, especially if unexpected…, but I still think that matchup is super hard.

Congrats for this build and thanks for sharing, it's truly beautiful!

Nimer 2757

Hi @zack! Yeah it was the same guy I did beat in the semifinal and yeah it was a bitterbridge deck. Both were great games against Axxo, an old friend and an awesome player. I actually won also the game in the swiss (by time), but at the end of the game I thought about it and I realized that I "forced" him into playing faster the sixth turn to play one more plot, and he made a mistake during challenges because of that. We played hundreds of games together so the atmosphere was very informal and that's why I asked him to play faster, to see what would happen with one more turn: at the end of the game though I didn't want to have won like that so I conceded. The matchup is tough but Valar Dohaeris and Nothing burns + torches are the cards that can make the difference: in the second game I did get rid of Hightower very soon and double valar secured the board for me. He also did run 3 nightmares which is unusual for Bitterbridge so I had even more difficulties: on the other hand he didn't play positive attachments so it was easier once I had enough resources to burn Margery or Mace with aDinS when I needed to. Both were great and tense games. ;)

Ebrey 157

@zack I beat a HRD Bitterbridge at Thrones WAR as well. It can be tough with only one 7 coster in the deck, but you have some advantages as well: 1) With few chuds in their chud, if you plaza of punishment one of them, they'll probably have to claim a big guy for MIL. 2) With Plaza + Dragon is No Slave, you can burn Mace and Marge even if they don't go into challenges 3) With Put to the Torch and Nothing Burns, you can get rid of Hightower which is their draw engine. I played Nothing Burns turn 1 in our game.

zack 126

Thanks for the feedback @Ebrey, that makes sense! I'll let you know how it goes if/when I face that monstrosity again ;-)

I tried this deck now a few times, but I have no idea how this one could have won 2 SC's.... and i play Targ since day one of this game.

Nearly every game i had very big economy problems, sometimes 3 or 4 rounds wiithout any economy location and so on

Nimer 2757

HI @Necrogoat, as I wrote in the comments the deck is not easy to play. You will need more than a couple of games to get used to it. Its playstyle is very different from the usual targaryen decks. I can try to give you a couple of advices: always search for flea, sons or econ during mulligan. Try to open coppers + coppers unless you're really forced into something else by the game state. That will help you developing your econ for the rest of the game. As soon as it will be available on our italian youTube channel I'll share the video of the final here. I was behind 9-0 but was able to come back, it should be an interesting game to watch for all those who want to try the deck.

Khal Drogon 1

Ciao @Nimersto provando questo deck ed oltre alle difficoltà iniziali, contro i GJ sembra impossibile giocare, rubano troppi luoghi chiave.

Hi nimer, i trying to play this deck and it seems impossible to play vs GJ, they take too many key-location like flea or plaza. Any tips?

Nimer 2757

Against greyjoy the main problem is that you are slow so they have 1-2 turns when it will be easy for them to trigger their events. We do not sow can't discard plaza though, so the huge problem is raiding the bay of ice. You could try to nothing burn their warship but if they draw a warship AND rading the very first turn there's not much you can do. If your meta is full of greyjoys you should think about swapping some torches for hand's judgement.

Ebrey 157

@Khal Drogon If your opponent has Euron and you can't oppose all 3 challenges, you may want to just not put out Fleabottom or Plaza of Pride until you find a duplicate. In my area, the Greyjoy players experimented with Raiding the Bay of Ice but ended up cutting most of them, because it's hard to fit them in as well as 3 Risen from the Sea and 3 We Do Not Sow, which are so good in Greyjoy.

Once you've got Astapor setup and a burn event in hand, you can burn any GJ char and should win the game!

Link to the Milan final game. The commentary is in italian but there is a useful graphic with points and challenges icons so you should be able to understand the game flow.

2x Counting Coppers is what I play for sometime. Mostly in Fealty but HRD with Plaza of Punishment is something I work with recently. I have similar plots but was not using Valar Dohaeris. Had Blood of the Dragon instead.

I agree about location control too. I was not playing Put to the Torch before but it is a great idea! Same story with Tourney Grounds. Non-limited, way better than Illyrio's Estate especially in a non-Fealty deck.

Heroes - no Drogo. No Mirri. No Greyworm is another reason to use Valar Dohaeris.

MadSirian 1

YEah!!! Another Nimer build! I like so much your builds and their gameplay. They re very special .

Robertschaefer 1

Got crushed using this deck against Greyjoy Kings of Winter. Double Coppers is a good idea, but when you are only getting 1 gold per turn it is brutal, plus reduced reserve really hurt. Never got off the ground from the opening.

Robertschaefer 1

Also...Political Disaster in that game was the final blow. It turned the game into a 100% win for the GJ deck.

Nimer 2757

I don't know what you guys were expecting but yeah, I did lose some games as well with the deck... :P

MiSiO 278

LOL This is a specific deck and like all decks has it's sweet spot. The big think is that it does not need gold to play characters. Well... Not much gold.

Robertschaefer 1

Lol - yes of course every deck theme has its weaknesses as well as strong points, I get that. I was just so easily dispensed with against Kings of Winter, when a low-gold theme of using two copper plots quickly becomes a near zero gold theme. Combined with political disaster (and I suspect many Kings of Winter decks will use it!) the effect seemed to break this deck completely. Maybe I am missing something? Or maybe there should be some adjustments made to this creative deck theme in anticipation of this matchup in case it gains traction in the meta?

Nimer 2757

@MadSirianthanks! @RobertschaeferI don't see Kings of Winter being "the meta" right now to be honest. I also face few Political Disaster. That said, when you see that agenda, hard mulligan for economy and flea bottom (unless they play barring the gates which could hurt a lot). KoW decks are supposed to play with few resources but so do you: unless they can stop your recursion, with qotho Second Sons + Flea, freedman, fire and blood you should be able to hold the board pretty easily. The deck is meant to play with almost no gold so choke shouldn't be a problem. There is literally no faction that can play more cost effective cards than Targaryen, and this deck has all of them... :D

Robertschaefer 1

"you should be able to hold the board pretty easily." LOLOL that's easy for you to say! I am not as good of a player. :-) I think this will take some time for me to become more comfortable with how to react tactically to different decks, agendas, and plots.

michaelius 1

When do You use Nothing burns like cold ?

Ebrey 157

@michaelius When people don't know the deck, they often set up Hightower or the Wall against you and you can do a turn 1 Nothing Burns. Otherwise, wait until you have a dupe of one of your unique locations in hand and then play nothing burns - it hits tons of great locations, FroSo, craven, etc.

Necrogoat 14

What exactly does a dupe help you at "can not be saved"?

Ebrey 157

@Necrogoat You play it again after you Nothing Burns.

Ebrey 157

That's why I said 'in hand' instead of 'in play'.

Nimer 2757

@michaelius in the case he has 2 non limited and one of them has a dupe, you can put to the torch it and then flip nothing burns to get rid of the other one. It usually doesn't hurt you that much, getting rid of a tourney ground or a location that you have another copy in your hand as Stephen said.

SpiriT 179

@Nimercoming up with another gem. You are a GoT genius. Plays so much fun and yet so different from usual Targ.

Nimer 2757

@SpiriT thanks mate, you’re too kind... ^^

MiSiO 278

@NimerWhat do You think about new Dany as a CS replacement in this deck?

Nimer 2757

She’s perfect for the deck but it will require the new event to shuffle the hand and draw 5 as well cause you will lose her insight, so it will be a problem with slots I guess. She’ll also allow you to play duel which may be a juicy option, depending on the meta. The new Arya may lead to a minicurve meta though so not sure about Duel.

MiSiO 278

@NimerThing with Dany is that she is not very reliable draw. There are games where I do not even see her. So new Dany + new event (maby 2 copies) and burn (3x A Dragon Is No Slave?) is going to be great. Duel is a cool option too. Arya will not stop people to play dupes. And she is such a GREAT target for new Dany. But IF Arya tweaks meta then burn will be even stronger.

Ebrey 157

Oh hey look, someone played this deck on stream at a Canadian SC! www.youtube.com
