BD Cosmos (Montreal) SC on Jan 2016 – Bara Fealty (7th)

I chose to go with my trusty Baratheon Fealty deck which I used to 4-0 the Winter GNK. I am still fairly new to this game and this is the deck that I’ve played the most by far. Here are the tweaks that I made since my previous version:

• -1 Littlefinger • -1 Chamber of the Painted Table • -1 The Iron Throne • +1 Support of the People • +1 King’s Hunting Party • +1 Hand’s Judgment

Really happy with this setup. I’ve found that I was not often happy with drawing Littlefinger except in top decking situations where he really shines and can pull you ahead so I cut him down to one copy and replaced him with a second King’s Hunting Party. Those guys are excellent at defending from military challenges that are key in your first turns, 6 STR is a lot. I pondered with removing the CoTP/Iron Throne combo but found it so useful in control matchups that I kept one of each and added a Support of the People to fetch the half you are missing. Furthermore it lets you grab The Red Keep early on if you don’t have it and it is probably the best card in the deck. That also freed one slot to get a second Hand’s Judgement in as I was expecting a lot of Targ at the tournament.

On to the tourney itself, 23 players, 5 rounds of Swiss and a cut to Top 4:

Round 1 vs Stark/Fealty (Win 1-0)

Rough match up if he can apply military pressure from the start, luckily I had a nice setup/turn one with a couple of chuds. He opened with Sneak attack and played Winter is coming to raise the claim to 3 on a Military challenge, I tried to cancel with HJ but he had one of his own. That hurt. He was able to get my board down to only Robert and Melisandre at some point but I somehow managed to get out of it and take control of the game afterwards when Stannis joined the party along with the Red Keep.

Round 2 vs Lannister/Fealty (Win 2-0)

Playing against my buddy Guillaume (really good player despite being, like me, new to this game) who got a great setup with Tywin, a Lannisport Merchant and a Western Fiefdom. He made me go first on turn one but I had a Milk for Tywin along with a duped up Robert to protect him from Tears of Lys and that proved critical. Later on I managed to intrigue away that Tears and drew tons of cards off the Red Keep for a clear victory.

Oh yeah… He didn’t run Confiscation. :)

Round 3 vs Targ/Fealty (Lose 2-1)

Another round, another buddy! This time it’s Dan who introduced me to this wonderful game (and most of the other games I played). We pretty much know each other’s decklist as we exchange comments on them a lot. Oh and I had never lost against him while playing Bara Fealty.

This time would be different as I made a critical mistake on turn one (lessons learned believe me) and was on the verge of conceding right after so let me walk you through it:

1- My board is Melisandre (duped), Robert (duped) and Dragonstone Faithful. 2- He wins a Military challenge. 3- Claim? I kill the Dragonstone Faithful. 4- You see what’s coming right? Well I didn’t. 5- MARCHED TO THE WALL! See ya Bob, it was nice meeting you.

I was so far behind at that point that it was pretty academic for him to pull out the victory. He didn’t let me the slightest chance at a comeback.

Round 4 vs Targ/Rose (Lose 2-2)

Playing against Julien, our wonderful TO, and I must admit I’m a little on tilt at this point regarding my previous round mistake.

On turn one, I get a little messed up figuring challenge math and send Melisandre face first into a standing dragon and leftover gold. Yeah you know it… DRACARYS!

Afterwards he had a Milk for Robert and tons of stand effect to play around Stannis. The game was over quickly. That thankfully let me get in a better state of mind for the last round.

Round 5 vs Bara/NW (Win 3-2)

I’ve never played against that deck but I expect him to be more focused on defence and Dominance then I am so I will probably take the role of the aggressor in the matchup.

I had Melisandre first on the board and followed up with Robert and that proved key. He played Stannis a long time before I did and I was quite happy because I had more kneeling power then him. His 3 Fiery Followers on the board gave me headaches tough and let him take Dominance early on. Once he played Melisandre I had a Milk in hand to deal with her. He slowed me down a lot with the Iron Throne and Chamber of the Painted Table and managed to go up to 9 or 10 power at some point.

Renown on Stannis (Lightbringer) and Bob let me catch up with him pretty quickly and win the game with minutes left on the clock.

Final result 3-2, good for 7th place with the Tiebreakers. Quite happy with the standing although I will admit I was disappointed with the way I played round 3 and 4. I might have still lost those games but they would’ve been close fights and great games instead of one-sided victory on my critical mistakes. Lessons learned and I shall not forget them.

Loved the way the deck played, I wouldn’t change anything right now.

I enjoyed very much your write up. I agree that you have to consider marched in any circumstance where you wouldn’t want to get rid of any of your characters on the board. Often we only think of protecting against the Marched when it would leave us with only one character left, but when it is Bob AND Mel, your opponent is still going to be thrilled to march either of those characters, and given that you could have kept the chud on the table and killed off one of the dupes to protect your board, that’s a scenario you will never forget.

Thanks for the write up, that lesson is a good one for everyone to learn :D.

@BillyDookuWhat are yur thoughts on Robert’s Warhammer?

@YellowJacket I tried it for a couple of test games and found I always had better things to do with my gold then playing King Robert’s Warhammer. I feel it is a win-more card (good only when you are ahead) and I don’t feel this deck needs it. I would play a second Lightbringer before considering the hammer.
