We had 12 players today at the second Store Championship in the Atlanta, Georgia area. Full stats are in the Annals of Castle Black. I was lucky enough to win the tournament playing a Greyjoy / Sun deck that I’ve been tweaking for a couple weeks. I’ll run through my games and then discuss my card choices.

Round 1 vs Gus with Bara Watch I setup Bastard Daughter, Nymeria, Iron Fleet Scout, and Roseroad, while he mulliganed into just Chamber of the Painted Table, Castle Black, and Dragonstone Port. I won quickly with unopposed power from Asha and Great Kraken despite Stannis and Melisandre doing their best to slow me down.

Win 1-0

Round 2 vs Shayne with Greyjoy Sun I setup Bastard Daughter, The Reader, and a Kingsroad to his Theon, Dornish Paramour, and Kingsroad. On turn 4ish my Filthy Accusations knelt his Balon and gave me the breathing room necessary to win. Reader did work, drawing at least 3 cards this game.

Win 2-0

Round 3 vs Ahmed with Lanni Rose I setup a Fishmonger, Theon, Sunspear, Seastone Chair, and Sea Tower compared to his double Gardeners, Burned Men and Margaery. He felt compelled to overcommit, flooding the board with cheap military icons to protect his Knight of Flowers from Seastone Chair, so I attacked his hand then Wildfired on turn 3, followed by Marched on turn 4. Nymeria borrowed Tyrion’s intrigue icon so he could enjoy the Tears of Lys.

Win 3-0

Round 4 vs James with Greyjoy Rose I setup Wendamyr, Bastard Daughter, Edric and Sunspear, while he countered with a duped Balon and two Fishmongers. I marshalled locations for a couple turns, then was in a great position after my Wildfire.

Win 4-0

Semi-finals vs Daniel with Lanni Rose I setup a Desert Scavenger, Master Caleotte, Roseroad, Seastone Chair, and Great Kraken to his Randyll, Gardener, Merchant, and Roseroad. The Chair did work, murdering Jaime and Tywin, thanks to unopposed challenges caused by Balon, Kraken’s Grasp, and Raiding Longships.

Win

Finals vs Shayne with Greyjoy Sun I setup Theon, Desert Scavenger, Great Kraken and Roseroad to his Shipwright, Theon, Sunspear and Iron Fleet Scout. I rushed, holding nothing back and taking power rather than draw from Great Kraken every time. Filthy on Balon yet again secured the win.

Deck Modifications I wasn’t sure about the plot deck beforehand. Running without any card advantage from Here to Serve, Summons, or Counting Coppers seemed risky, but the deck sets up extremely well and gets draw from multiple sources. Supporting the People is basically a 4th Great Kraken, so I found it ASAP in every game.

I picked Clash of Kings over Rise of the Kraken for the extra gold and initiative, sacrificing some closing speed for more consistency.

Nymeria, Reader and Raiding Longship are fantastic. Two copies of each worked great. I actually never drew Syrio all day, so I’m still unsure whether he deserves a spot.

I ran just 1 copy of several unique characters, and only 2 copies of Asha, to hedge my bets against Targaryen (which I never faced). Targ was the toughest matchup in testing.

I also ran 1 copy of several events, which runs counter to conventional wisdom, but I like to have a toolbox with a variety of tools. It gives me options, keeps my opponents guessing, and reduces the chance of drawing a redundant second copy of a given event.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask! Thanks!

Nice looking deck, Steve and thanks for the comprehensive write up.

How often did you get to control initiative? Sunspear is a nice outlet but seems like a lot of this deck will suffer if made to go second more.

Does the lack of stand tech worry you at all? I know you felt the pain of it to some extent in the first game, but how would suspect this would fare against something like pure Baratheon fealty?

Thanks!

Even against the other Greyjoys, I was able to control initiative most of the time, especially late-game when it mattered most thanks to Clash. Sunspear was my “plan B” if I didn’t play first. My only “go first” triggers are 2 Raiding Longships and 2 Kraken’s Grasp, so if they’re turned off for a round it’s not the end of the world.

After Targ, yes Bara Fealty is probably the toughest matchup. Seal of the Hand has been in and out of my list during testing, but I eventually decided on zero attachments to help setups and neuter my opponent’s Confiscation.

I’m personally a big fan of the customization of decks and the variety of options. In Netrunner, my decks were quite famous for that 1x and 2x. However, I don’t find this to be working out for me in Thrones. Either my understanding of the flow of the game is still pretty limited ( quite possible ), or it simply has to do with the fact that in Netrunner you can invest into manual draw in the form of clicks at any point of time.

Either case, I’ll keep staying more on the 3x and with a few 2x ( especially in the case of events), hoping that I can develop my same deck building sense as for Netrunner and then go more into the 1x and a few of 2x spectrum :)

Ill be trying this deck out tonight. I am intrigued by the fact that it goes against the common beliefs.

@Dydraalso your runner deck likely had 45 cards only, so smaller deck increases the chances to a see a 1 of card in a 45 card deck.

How did Aeron and Alannys work for you? They didn’t make the cut in my version, did you see them much?

scantrell24 3334

Patrick, I actually didn’t see either very often. Aeron brought Theon back from the dead once, but I don’t think the ability on Alannys ever mattered. She’ll be replaced once there’s a better option.

Do you need the intrigue icon from Alannys? If not, I’d slot Obara in there and call it a day.

scantrell24 3334

The intrigue icon is part of the appeal, but mainly she’s cheaper because she can be reduced by Sea tower, and can trigger the Reader.

This Deck looks great. I am going to use this as a base, and make some slight changes for my play style. Looks great and glad to see you did so well!

I beat the crap out of a Targ/Rose deck last night with this. The tried to crown Asha and I was able to keep her alive with risen and the game turned. Im still not sure about only having 1 of so many things but it did help me not to worry about the dead pile.

In testing my groups version of the deck we had several games where economy was an issue. Some games you get the reducers and it’s great but in others you’re stuck with Nymeria that you can’t reduce or a Balon/Euron that you can’t get into play. We added in Trading with the Pentoshi since it often doesn’t matter what the opponent plays and allows us to play multiple power characters in a turn or a big character and a key location/events. Have you given any thought to that or had the same economy problems from time to time?

scantrell24 3334

@jtattaWell, any deck will struggle when it doesn’t see economy. I had one game where I drew only a single Kingsroad but still managed to win. I tried to save Calling for when I wanted to play Nymeria, Balon or Euron. Did you change any of the other plots before adding Trading?

Also you can always drop something for a third desert scavenger.

Thank you for posting this deck, man - I was looking for something fun to play instead of GJ Fealty, and this was awesome. I took it to a Store Championship warm-up event and went 4-1, losing only to Britt Finch's Stark/Rose - I had a set-up of double Nymeria/Shipwright/gold, but got greedy on turn one and dropped Balon plus Great Kraken instead of Euron. Britt controlled me beautifully and hit with a military claim, Tears (which also pulled Euron from my hand), and a turn two Marched to get rid of Nymeria. A second Tears on turn two sealed the deal, but it was definitely an educational experience!

Other than that, all my games felt comfortable, and the deck rarely seems to setup badly. Despite your self-effacing title, this deck is seriously good, dude. Thank you again!

scantrell24 3334

@HinomuraThanks! Tears is definitely one of the deck's weaknesses. I'm considering an extra Risen in place of the 2nd Confinement to protect Balon, and reduce the number of times I have to save a gold for the Challenges phase.
