SC Winner @ Randolph (Montreal) 03/2016 – Lanni Wolf

After winning my first SC in Québec playing Lanni Sun (hand destruction, Varys) I wanted to try something different and I drafted this House/Agenda combination in a draft with my playgroup so I figured I’d get some experience with it. It turns out it’s really good!

Approximately 20 players at the tournament, so we played 4 rounds with a cut to top 4.

Some comments on the deck building, most of it is pretty straightforward though:

  • Play 3x The Hound, he is that good and I wanted to see him every game.

  • Heads on Spikes might seem like and odd choice for plots and it is a flex slot. Ended up choosing it mainly because I wanted another mid/high initiative plot and didn’t want to use Summons because of the zero initiative. It was also the plot I didn’t mind playing when I didn’t need another of my plot effects. And it played so well during the day:

o Round 1: Seal of the Hand (quite happy)

o Round 2: Robb Stark (that he took with Summons on turn 1)

o Round 3: Syrio Forel

o Round 4: (no idea, can’t remember)

o Top 4: Olenna’s Informant (took me to 14 power)

o Top2: Put to the Sword

Round 1 vs Lannister LotC (Alex C.) Loss 0-1

My toughest games in the tournaments I played have always been against Alex and he pulled it off in a close game were the power boost from LotC proved crucial. Well played.

Round 2 vs Stark Fealty (Daniel M.) Win 1-1

Unfortunately for him he mulliganed into a weak setup with Summer as his only character. I decided not to March him in case he went for the double Marched. He was low on characters and used Summons on turn 1 to get Robb Stark without being able to marshall him. I used Heads on Spikes on turn 2 and pulled Robb out of a 6 cards hand and then kept applying military pressure so he couldn’t come back.

Round 3 vs Martel LotC (Guillaume C.) Win 2-1

Intrigued away Arianne, HoS Syrio, Tears on Nymeria and intrigued The Red Viper meant his board full of chuds couldn’t keep up with my big guys.

Round 4 vs Greyjoy Fealty (Benoit) Win 3-1

He setup a lone Asha that I quickly Marched to the Wall and marshalled a lone Euron on turn one. Again, military pressure took the game.

I also had Widow’s Wail and Seal of the Hand to prevent the Raiding Longships from pushing through unopposed (crucial because he had The Seastone Chair out as well).

Made the cut in 4th place in part due to 5th and 6th place getting mod wins somewhere during the tournament.

Top 4 vs Tyrell LotC (Phil P.)

Tight game where a duped Randyll from the setup was gaining power really quickly. Got a Hand’s Judgment out of his hand by using Treachery on a Mare in Heat trigger where I didn’t use Bran Stark to push it through. That proved critical latter on when he had a 2nd Hand’s Judgment for my Tears of Lys on The Knight of Flowers with 2 or 3 powers on him. Thank you Bran.

Used Heads on Spikes on the last turn to get the last card out of his hand and it turned out to be Olenna’s informant, taking me to 14 power with Tywin and Eddard on the board. Great game, close one.

Top 2 vs Lannister LotC (Alex C.)

Rematch from round 1 where I lost. Alex got the Regional Bye because I already had mine but unfortunately it didn’t turn out to be a game worthy of a SC final.

We both mulligan, I get lucky and setup Tywin, Lannisport Merchant and Western Fiefdom against... Lannisport, Cersei’s Wheelhouse and Western Fiefdom.

I felt sorry for him and it was over in 15 minutes.

One word about the venue: Randolph is a gaming Pub, it was crazy! Such a nice place and it was packed with people playing a million different games. Loved it. The downside is that it’s not easy to refrain from drinking too many beers to stay sharp during the tournament!
