This is the updated version of our Lannister Rains deck. We took this to one of the Road to Nationals events. There were 31 players, 5 rounds of Swiss with a cut to top 8. This deck went undefeated all day. Below is a link to our most recent video wherein we review part of the Swiss finals.

Your decks play really smoothly. Very tuned and balanced. Congrats.

Thanks! We spend a lot of time brainstorming ways to make it as efficient as possible and even more time is spent playtesting the deck.

Hi! Why did you choose Forgotten Plans? Is it a meta choice?

sygmaghost94 852

Forgotten Plans was indeed a meta call, as was Game of Thrones. We cut Varys Riddle and Wardens for these plots to help against Tyrell Crossing and Bara dom decks.

Why no confiscation? excelent deck otherwise

Same question as my neighbour, No confiscation nor Rattlershirts ? I think you should have been lucky not hitting Craven.

This deck used to run Confiscation, but I never really liked it. There were either too many attachments to deal with (Milk, Craven, icon removal) or there were not enough for the plot to be worth it. At times, it felt like a dead card and I would wish I had anything else to play. I switched it out for Noble Cause and found that the extra economy was well worth the trade. As for Rattleshirts, they only have one icon and it's not intrigue. Similarly, I don't run Ser Gregor Clegane because it doesn't fit the theme of the deck.

I understand, I have the same feeling with Confiscation. So you just assume you are gonna loose against a NW Craven deck ?

sygmaghost94 852

Those matchups may be more difficult, but I never assume I am going to lose.

How did it play against Targs without dragonslayer Ser Ilyn Payne?

sygmaghost94 852

I played a Targ Kings of Winter round 2. I used Forgotten Plans turn one to blank his Wraiths. First Snow of Winter is the ultimate dragonslayer!!

Your deck is absolutely amazing - I have loved using it. The more I think about it, the cleverer the deck becomes.

I do have a few problems with it though. Firstly, sometimes I have to choose between using rains or using Shadowblack Lane, and so sometimes I feel like Shadowblack becomes a dead card, but on the other hand, sometimes it is preferable to triggering rains. Secondly, as previously mentioned, the lack of Confiscation means that you are liable to get screwed over by Milks/Cravens etc. Although I do understand from your explanation why it is that you omitted it.

I'm considering trying to run this or something like it in Melee (e.g. Cersei + Master of Whispers + Trial by Combat = fun times). Is there anything you would suggest changing?

LGB 171

I really like shadowack with rains. You tranfers problem to the foes... :)

KhosroTheGreat 31

@LGB I don't agree, because really you should decide if it would be more beneficial to use rains or to use Shadowblack. If you want to get rains, you would then kneel the appropriate number of characters to ensure that you won the intrigue challenge by at least 5.

The only time when having both on the field is great is when you want to use the threat of rains to have your opponent kneel a certain number of characters to prevent you triggering rains, and then you can win the challenge and use Shadowblack instead.

Ok @KhosroTheGreat, you are probably roght. I am only learning... Thank you for sharing.

@KhosroTheGreat Honestly, your guess is as good as mine. The only time I ever play melee is at Gen Con, so I'm certainly not the right to give advice on that. You're idea sounds like it could be really devastating after resetting every player with Wildfire.

KhosroTheGreat 31

@sygmaghost94 do you know of any places where I can learn more about Melee?

Also, how did you make such a refined deck? As a new player, I'm curious as to your deckbuilding process. Did you just test it a lot?

sygmaghost94 852

My buddy Tyler and I spent a lot of time working on the deck. Originally, the idea started with Martell Rains using Wildfire and Quentyn to get your opponent down to a few characters and follow up with Marched. After some testing, we found this was easier said than done. Then, we realized we could accomplish the same combo using Lannister and Trial. Then we just spent hours brainstorming and playtesting in order to make the deck as consistent as possible. Taking the time to become a master of your deck will allow you to see exactly how to improve it where it lacks and how to exploit it where it shines.

Good video and deck, I am a fan!

Care to explain why you put the 3x Wildling Horde? to compensate for the lack of power icon?

Also, I am curious about the 3x Eyrie in a meta where location hate is becoming more popular.

Thanks

sygmaghost94 852

Wildling Horde is in there to mitigate my lack of beefy power icons. The Eyrie is fantastic, but shines especially in this deck because it allows you to keep 4 characters on your wildfire turn while your opponent goes down to 3. Additionally, it acts as a repeatable save that helps play for a longer game. It can also be an aggressive card by choosing your opponent's chump character to gain immunity, forcing them to claim better characters. This works incredibly well on your First Snow turns. I did not see any location hate at the tourney, but I don't think it would have completely lost me the gain to not have The Eyrie. Some games I never saw it. It's just one of the many different tricks this deck has to offer.

tonythetiger891 55

why 63 cards?

sygmaghost94 852

@tonythetiger891 The deck was originally 61 cards, running 1x Widow's Wail. However, we decided to add 3x Milk of the Poppy to help against a Tyrell Crossing matchup. We thought this deck would be more popular because it had just won Batalla Por el Muro and therefore, we wanted to have some extra tech against it. So we dropped Widow's Wail and added the 3 Milks.
