This is the deck I used to win Dance of Dragons yesterday, the largest North American regional tournament. Play the good cards + play well = win. Play tears of lys, play three of them, every, single, time. I saw even very good players playing absolutely unplayable trash, and yet no one played tears of lys against me the entire day. If you can find room for garbage like isle of ravens, close call and heads on spikes, surely you can make room for a card that is the best kill spell in the game and on the very short list for best card in the game. Or don't, and I'll keep murdering people with 3x Gregor Cleganes. I suppose the choice is yours.

Loooooooool

celric 399

Well, a lot of people are not playing Tears because it only kills Gregor in the Lannister matchup. It's great in Lanni, Targ, and Stark attrition decks right now, but far from an obvious auto-include.

celric 399

That said, congrats on the win.

Polli85 185

Congratulations to your win. I like the inclusion of three tears.

Besides from your deck: Can you explain why you think that Close Call and especially heads on spikes is garbage?

keldozad 2

You can kneel hound with filthy and poison him after or poison reducer and burned man to apply pressure for marched after mill claim..

jm2215 767

thanks for the congrats guys, as to keldozad's comment yes you can also treachery the hounds reaction and tears him in the mirror, or kill a burned man/merchant to setup a great marched to the wall, but the mirror isn't super prevalent right now, in fact I didn't play another lannister deck at all yesterday and NY is sort of a lannister hotbed usually.

@celric sure I can explain. Plots are the single most important part of your deck. They have a larger impact than any other card. They are also the only cards you are guaranteed to see every single game. This makes them incredibly precious and you need to get as much value/power out of them as possible. Close call, when broken down is essentially a 5-0-1 draw a card 75% of the time, have an additional effect 20% of the time. You need to draw another copy of the character you already had die, have the ability to play that character, and have both of those things still be relevant to the board state for the card to really do anything. This is simply not even close to powerful enough to warrant a precious plot slot. Heads on spikes is a 4-6-1 your opponent discards a card with the upsides of possibly gaining you 2 power and possibly making other cards in their hand dead. Even if you hit a character you get no additional impact from the card if they do not draw another one. Once again this is extremely weak in comparison to other plots. Basically they do nothing to affect the board in any immediate way, have risks of doing literally nothing, and require a multitude of things to happen to achieve full value, which is of dubious power level even if achieved. This mixture is why they are awful cards.

jm2215 767

sorry the explanation was @Polli85not @celric

msb222 87

Aha, so you did have 1x Put and a 1x Varys after all ;). Nice playing - sorry I didn't put up more of a fight. Love the 3x Gregor, still underrated.

msb222 87

And for the record I was going to play Tears, until I realized that you need to win an intrigue challenge first.

jm2215 767

hahaha @msb222i suppose if you cannot ever win an int challenge it may not be the card for you, always nice playing, the whole event was actually a blast yesterday

YEEZUS 53

Congrats. Solid deck and solid showing. Two questions: 1. Did anyone play duel against you/ do you take any certain line of play if you expect duel? And 2. Did you consider ilyn payne at all, as he had decent value in targ and nw matchups which are common these days?

jm2215 767

@YEEZUSnone of the martel players dueled me that I can remember, but it was a long day, maybe in my first martel match. You just don't commit two huge guys to the board if you suspect it. You can usually get by with just one monster and a tyrion or 4 drop roleplayer. If that's not possible then play out of your big guys, but once in a while the plot will be good against you.

I did consider Ilyn, but the problem is he's not even good vs targ. While he eats a lot of their dudes, he doesnt do anything in the challenge phase. If I can afford to spend 6 gold on someone who doesnt help me in the challenge phase against targ, i've likely already won the game. That being said he's great against NW. Ultimately I went with the more consistant powerful threats.

psuczyns 73

what was your most common usage for The Eyrie? pre-Valar (either seeing it coming from your opponent or knowing you were going to play it), using it on their claim soak or using it on your own guys at the start of challenges?

Ghost00 19

Why no queen cersei in this?

Acloakofred 53

You're a wizard Harry.

jm2215 767

@psuczynsbasically you drop it, use it aggressively the first turn to help take the board, then protect your biggest dude every turn from valar. Obv thats over simplified but thats the basic framework

@Ghost00cause I have 6 7 drops already that are all far better than her, the one of 4 cost cersei is very good here. She doesn't fit the curve as is and she is in no way better than tywin or the mountain here so she fell a bit short.

@AcloakofredLOL thx dude

Ela 92

@jm2215 You decided to run 0 Rattleshirt's Raiders. Given that you can easily push the military challenge, I guess that you must really despise the card. I am myself on the edge of cutting it, therefore I would be very interested in your opinion on this card.

jm2215 767

@Elayou guessed correct. I think the card is also unplayable. It is a 4 cost braided warrior in most positions. Against many of the attachment heavy decks, your big guys are the ones getting cravened/imprisoned or whatever else, and you can very easily be unable to push the mil challenge in that board state, particularly when you just spent 4 gold on a do nothing 3 strength unit. Confiscation is usually enough, the super attachment heavy decks are a problem from time to time, but rattleshirts is not the answer

imabunneh 366

I switched out Confiscation and Marched for Heads on Spikes and Close Call, and to compensate for no Confiscation I've swapped 1 each of Tywin and Tyrion for 2x Rattleshirt Raiders. I think the deck's probably better now.

keldozad 2

Yep for homeplay really good call

jm2215 767

@imabunnehLOL did you cut great halls for isle of ravens to reuse our busted events too?

imabunneh 366

@jm2215 no I'm not stupid, was thinking of cutting a milk for it though

Euro Bruh 90

What trash of a deck . I could beat this with a Dothraki deck with zero intrigue icons. Shows what sorry state the NY meta is in.

Bestialterata 142

Close call is everything but garbage

jm2215 767

@AndrasLOL buddy

@Bestialteratawell you're wrong, I am right, the card is trash, I've gone into great detail about why several times, at this point I'm just gonna continue pointing to the scoreboard. One can only try to educate the community, if they don't wanna listen, that's on them.

PhoenixInferno 15

It's not trash, but given that there's only 7 plots (12 if you play Rains), I want to play only the very best plots - and Close Call is not one of the very best plots.

Why A Game of Thrones as your 5th Rains plot? How often does it come into play?

jm2215 767

@PhoenixInfernoIt's the 4th least played plot, wildfire being the one I play the least. That being said when you play it, you usually absolutely decimate your opponent. It often equates to them not getting a challenge phase which is a very powerful effect. I tried a couple lists without it, but ultimately I felt naked not having it. Littlefingers meddling would be the 6th card I would consider, but seeing as how many of my events are reactive and not proactive, I think it's a bit short of making the grade.

WoodenJew 1

Just won a Brisbane pre-regional mini event with this. It's a great deck!

Euro Bruh 90

@WoodenJew congrats!!! I remember playing you just a day before the event on ironthrone. Was gonna look up where you finished but now I know :) Good luck in your regional down under Andras aka lmao

Fjord_ 1

Is there a primer available explaining the strategy and how to play this deck? I'm somewhat of a new player. From a novice perspective this looks like an aggro deck that tries to force through intrigue challenges.

jm2215 767

@WoodenJewCongrats dude, always happy to see others have success with my lists!

@Fjord_There currently is not, although I am considering doing a video deck tech for my youtube channel

Fjord_ 1

@jm2215 As I said I'm somewhat of a new player, but I heard on a podcast this deck is actually pretty good for beginners if you have an mtg background. After playing a few differ Lanni-Rains lists this deck mostly definitely does not feel friendly for a new player.

jm2215 767

@Fjord_Yeah, I do not know which podcast said that this was a beginner friendly deck, but they are wrong. If I wind up doing a video deck tech I will post it in here, other than that I would recommend Targaryen decks for a beginner as they are pretty board centric and teach you a lot of the fundamentals of the game.

WoodenJew 1

@jm2215 @Andras Piloted this deck to 1st place at the Queensland Regionals (King of swiss/8-0). Can confirm that Tears of Lys is the best kill spell in the game.

jm2215 767

@WoodenJewgratz man! always glad to see others have success with my lists!

iaan 17

Joe, what do you think of Fever Dreams?

gundamz 20

How essential is Valar to this deck?

sjeps 1

What do you think about bannering Kraken for location control and iron mines?
