Rules FAQ

  • You can trigger Pycelle when a card is discarded from hand for any reason. This includes costs (like Gold Mine), effects (like Gunthor Son of Gurn), claim, and reserve.

  • You know which card is being discarded from hand before triggering Pycelle. The card then becomes hidden information again when it is placed facedown under a player's agenda. Players are not forced the maintain the order of facedown cards under their agenda, so their opponents cannot track whether a particular card is still there (for example, after cards have been switched by The Conclave agenda).

  • Pycelle shares the interrupt window with Missandei, Ser Jorah Mormont (LMHR) and Ser Meryn Trant. They are all replacement effects that can be triggered one after another, so whichever is triggered last prevails.

  • You can still trigger cards like Cersei Lannister (LoCR) or Tywin's Stratagem after triggering Pycelle, because the card is still considered to have been discarded from hand. However, cards like The Great Pyramid or The Gold Price can no longer be used. They implicitly work with the discard pile only, so they will not be able to find the card after Pycelle has "intercepted" it. Heads on Spikes will also not be able to put the character in the dead pile, but you still get the 2 power. (See Card Abilities & Out-of-Play Areas.)

  • You can trigger Pycelle on your own cards.

  • Cards under a player's agenda are not considered to be in play. They are essentially removed from the game permanently, unless that player is playing The Conclave or Archmaester Marwyn.

  • If Drowned God Fanatic is being discarded from hand as the cost of its ability and you use Pycelle's interrupt on it, that same copy of Drowned God Fanatic cannot be used again to cancel Pycelle's ability. (This ruling is provisional and should be officially confirmed in an upcoming FAQ update.)
