Played this deck in a winter OP kit tournament today in Massachusetts. Tournament was well run and loads of fun. Ended up Top 4 out of 22 players (I believe), can’t complain about that.
Here’s a rundown of the day, I’m sorry to any of my opponents if I got something wrong, my memory is kind of hazy after a number of intense games and a couple hour drive back home.
Round 1 - Martell Fealty
I wasn’t feeling great about this game when I mulliganed a hand away that had a Melisandre as my only character into a hand that gave me only Paxter Redwyne and one other character (I think it was a Garden Caretaker). However, turn one sees me buying Melisandre and Margaery Tyrell, so it could be worse. He puts some stuff out, including Edric Dayne and a House Dayne Knight. I used Tears of Lys on his Edric Dayne when he failed to give him an to remove his stealth presence. From there, it was a pretty regular back and forth game, but between Melisandre and Filthy Accusations I was able to keep his big guys down, including a Doran Martell with Dawn, Arianne Martell and The Red Viper being out together. Win 1-0.
Round 2 - Baratheon, Banner of the Wolf
I can’t remember what characters I played out early, but I did start with The Iron Throne in play against my opponent’s Chamber of the Painted Table and bunch of Stark cards (Bran Stark, Sansa Stark, and a Winterfell Steward). I got my own Chamber of the Painted Table out fairly early, which helped give me a good sized lead. Robert Baratheon made his appearance across the board with a duplicate, but I managed to get Melisandre out and keep him pinned down, while I steadily gained power until the end. Win 2-0
Round 3 - Lannister Fealty
What a game this was! I had a really rough start where I could only start Randyll Tarly and a location, it was either a The Roseroad or The Iron Throne. I surprisingly don’t see a Marched to the Wall right away, but I do get hit with a Tears of Lys, taking out my Randyll Tarly. The next few turns see #Melisandre kind of hanging around by herself, as I have to keep top-decking characters to fill my board. I get Chamber of the Painted Table out and start crawling my way up in power. After a few turns i was sitting at 13-14 power against his 3-4. I’m sitting on Melisandre, Margaery Tyrell and Selyse Baratheon, against his The Hound, Joffrey Baratheon with a Widow’s Wail, and The Tickler. I think I have it, but then Tywin Lannister hits the board. Once he’s out, dominance is no longer a sure thing, so my opponent starts to make his comeback. Time gets called when I’m at 14 to his 13, and we both have Calm Over Westeros out, both naming . I do my best to oppose, but Tywin Lannister’s Renown wins the day. Loss 2-1.
Round 4 - Night’ Watch, Banner of the Stag
This game was fairly straightforward. He starts with The Wall in play, I start with Chamber of the Painted Table and Fiery Followers. He gains power, I take it from him. I think we finished after 15 min or so, with my 15 against his 3. Win 3-1.
Top 4 - Targaryen, Banner of the Rose
I wish there had been more of a game to come from this, but I was not seeing characters. For most of the game I had no icons at all on the board, just and . I do my best to play the long game utilizing The Iron Throne and Chamber of the Painted Table, but he has The Knight of Flowers with a Seal of the Hand set up quickly alongside Margaery Tyrell. I manage to stall until Plot 8, but he wins it 15-7.
End of day 3-2.
I’m not sure if I’ll be making any changes to this version of the deck with The Road to Winterfell so close to release, it may look a lot different after the pack comes out.
Thanks for taking a look!
