Portsmouth, NH Tournament Win - Wildlings, Undefeated Swiss 1.0

This was a tournament winner in a field of 10 people that went four rounds without a cut. It went 4-0. It is a direct copy of the derived deck. I hadn't played Lannister much in the past, and the idea of playing wildlings was what drove me to give it a shot. Lannister just isn't one of those houses that entices me. It was an excellently designed deck and it performed well.

In the first round the deck went up against Jimmy's Martell deck that was meant to strip icons away from my characters and keep the challenges down. With three Rattleshirt's Raiders available to me, when I found one, I was able to start gaining momentum back and a Milk of the Poppy on Nymeria Sand put me into a position to take the advantage.

The second round against Lauren was a harsh one. She was playing her Greyjoy The Lord of the Crossing. This one was one game where Mance Rayder got to ambush in a good amount of wildlings and there was a tight moment or two where either of us could potentially have gotten that extra power to end the round a turn earlier. But, it ended up going down to a 14 to 14 power matchup and my Counting Coppers drew into a Milk of the Poppy and a Nightmares to keep a valid challenge from being made on her end without me winning defensively with reknown on my two tricons that I had on the table and the disadvantage that The Lord of the Crossing brings along with that first challenge. As a result I squeaked this one out.

The third round was against Mike I believe who was running a Lannister Banner of the Dragon. I had a slightly better setup, and kept control over key characters that hit the board such as Mirri Maz Duur and Tywin Lannister. The extra power gain from The Lord of the Crossing pushed me over the top quicker than his deck could manage.

The fourth and final round was against Brian who I have known for 22 years or so now; always nice to meet up with your friends in the final round at least if you do have to match up. He was running Tyrell Banner of the Dragon that focused on a very dedicated Mirri Maz Duur build. It involved getting her off on multiple challenges with high strength and stealthing out key characters that could interfere. We found ourselves in an odd spot where his board was much better than mine, but the duped Tywin Lannister and duped Seal of the Hand could stop Mirri Maz Duur at every turn. Ocassionally I would sit on my gold just so that I could be sure to save against a multiple challenge Mirri Maz Duur, and that was ok. I made one final push near the end to push myself over the top and take it down with The Lord of the Crossing support, despite the presence he had on the board and being able to stand a character 3 or 4 times with Margaery Tyrell helping out. Neither of us found any control cards for dealing with that problem character and were constantly trying to win challenges at the right times with ours, but Tywin Lannister came out on top.

It was a fun day and we all went out and had drinks across the street afterwards. I will definately be going up to Portsmouth and playing again in the future.
