This deck was made with the upcoming Aegon Targaryen (MoM) in mind. Once it's released i'll probably drop Irri, Missandei and The Titan's Bastard.
The coolest King cards are Long May He Reign and King Robert's Legacy. This deck is an attempt to make them work consistently.
Half of the character slots (once Aegon arrives) are big Kings. The other half are cheap Targs that Renly Baratheon (FotS) jumps in, that trigger Aegon Targaryen (MoM) and serve as fodder for more important stuff with Hizdahr zo Loraq (R)'s action.
The important stuff is, in order:
-
King's Landing (SoKL) - solves your economy with draw and location access.
-
Summerhall (FtR) - keeps Long May He Reign on the board which is essential.
-
The Stormlands - huge advantage in challenge phase with your immortal big power Kings that steal defenders.
-
The Red Keep (Core) - duh
This is a Baratheon deck. The idea is to win power challenges and win them big. Hiz and Aegon are honorary Baratheons because of their King traits. The Targ discard mechanic is for economy only and the rest of that package (Plaza of Pride, Queensguard and Flea Bottom (R)) works against what this deck is trying to do, which is focus on Long May He Reign and King Robert's Legacy.
Black Market Merchant and Haldon Halfmaester fetch them for you, while Ghiscari Elite and Isle of Ravens save them from the discard pile.
Free Brothers thin out your deck and supply you with free presence on the board since you always trigger Freedmen with your huge power swings. For example when you sneak in Second Sons with Renly.
The plots are tactical. At the Gates into Gates of the Moon is the generic opener, the rest depends on the board. Close Call if a King died before Summerhall (FtR). Late Summer Feast if Hiz and Kings Landing don't show up. The Pointy End if opponent goes big, The First Snow of Winter if they go small. The King in the North (FotOG) hurts you too, but probably a lot less than them. Exchange of Information gives you the two star cards.
Of course the true Kings are Robert Baratheon (Core) and Stannis Baratheon (FotS). The rest is paving the way for them to hit.
Any advice is welcome!
Neat deck! One comment: If you're committed to King Robert's Legacy, is it worth adding in some combat tricks to make work more reliably? No Song So Sweet is probably the one I would add. I've tried Legacy a little bit and my experience is that when you're attacking (and winning) with a King and have 3+ gold, opponents will just let it go unopposed.
In general I feel like KRL is a bit of a trap card - splashy effect, very hard to trigger. I think the deck is good as it is, but if you're all in on Summerhall, you could try swapping in King Robert's Warhammer since you can trigger it without sacrificing it on power challenges.
