Core Set Cards

A Friendly Open review:

House Targaryen Fealty.

Goal:

Learn the basics of the game starting from the Core Set. We are reviewing decks that performed well, back in 2015, and why they were good back then. The idea is to help newer player understand the existent mechanics within a faction. Some of these mechanics are still strong today, many years later.

Themes:

Burn, Stand, Aggro, Dragons.

The gameplan:

The main objective of the Targaryen player is to apply pressure on the board with cards like Khal Drogo (Core), Dracarys!, Plaza of Punishment and then Marched to the Wall.

  • This deck is a classic Targ deck oriented around burn (reducing the strength of the opponent's characters).
  • With burn, Daenerys Targaryen (Core) is a key piece. While she is standing, all participating characters of your opponent will be reduced by 1 strength.
  • Ideally, with any Dragon (Drogon (Core), Rhaegal (Core), Viserion (Core) you can play Dracarys! to kill a participating character with 4 strength, 5 strength if you have Daenerys standing. Don't forget to trigger Plaza of Punishment if you win a challenge. At this point, you can kill a low strength character Plaza or you can do an additional -2 strength on the same character that you played Dracarys! if Dracarys didn't preciously killed that character.

Setup:

Try to get a combination of the following in your starting hand:

  • Daenerys Targaryen (Core), Khal Drogo (Core), Dracarys!
  • A combination of cards costing 6, 2 and 0
  • A combination of cards costing 7, 1 and 0
  • A combination of cards costing 5, 2, 1 and 0
  • A combination of cards costing 3, 2 and 2
  • The economy of the Core Set is limited. If you can setup Khal or Daenerys without getting Marched to the Wall by your opponent, go ahead!

As in any deck, a starting hand with an economy card (limited locations, Illyrio's Estate, The Kingsroad, The Roseroad) is always advantageous. Optionally Littlefinger (Core) and Targaryen Loyalist are there to help. Note: Littlefinger (Core) would be better if used in marshalling for his draw ability.
